Halloween treats?

What do health nuts give out for Halloween?

07:44 PM CDT on Monday, October 25, 2004

By MICHAEL PRECKER / The Dallas Morning News

Larry North, one of Dallas' leading diet and fitness gurus, used to reward trick-or-treaters with nutrition bars or granola.

"You know, health-oriented stuff," he says.

Then one Halloween night about six years ago, Mr. North overheard a mom directing her kids on their hunt for goodies.

"She said, 'Don't go there – that's Larry North's house. They won't have anything good.' "So the author and health club owner reconsidered the issue.

"We're big on Halloween, and we want people to enjoy coming to our house," he says. "I ate a lot of candy as a kid and I turned out all right.

"So now we give out the biggest, fattest, sugary-est candy bars money can buy."

Is that good nutrition? Of course not. But it's also a special occasion.

"Everybody knows that bad food choices on a holiday don't count," Mr. North jokes.

Not everybody goes along with that philosophy, according to an informal, unscientific survey. Here's a preview of what to expect if you knock on the doors of some of our locally prominent healthy lifestyle folks this Halloween:
I've been trying to figure this out for this year. I don't remember the last time I did the Halloween thing, and I don't want to buy candy 'cause I'll eat it. Does anyone here have suggestions?

My suggestion is to buy your candy AM on the 31st. That way the candy will not be in your house that long. I always run threw all my candy befor the kids run out so there is nothing left for me to eat.

Give out cards (baseball/pokemon, whatever instead - or give out little toys... rather than candy.
Halloween pencils

There was a house I used to love to go to when I was a kid. The lady their didn't give out candy, she gave out wierd fruit. I'm not talking your ordinary exotic stuff, she'd hand out breadfruit, starfruit, passionfruit, mangos, etc... Things kids don't see everyday, it was awesome!

Those were the places most kids hated. Mom and Dad ended up getting the fruit.

Loose change is good. Get a bunch of quarters - cash is always king.

The people across the street from my parents house always made little bags of popcorn. We always liked that, especially if we were lucky and got a fresh bag

colored popcorn balls were always cool. We'd eat one or two and get our hands all sticky then we'd start a huge popcorn ball fight.. heh

I always buy our "giveaway" candy late in the season, like the day of. I also buy a few bags of "the good stuff" (ie Snickers, Reese's Cups, 3 Musketeers, etc.), and mix it with the Smarties, lollipops, etc. I never buy anything that I, myself, don't like. That way I get what leftovers the little gobblins don't get.

That defeats the purpose though - he's trying to NOT eat the candy... So you buy stuff you don't like ....

I'm hoping nobody comes by my apartment. You have to buzz to be let in, and if punk ass kids buzz me all day/night I'm going to be pissed.

I buy what I like. I don't need to eat it, but I usually only get 3 or 4 trick or treaters anyway. I put the bowl on the porch, because I'm usually not at home. If I was that first kid, I'd dump the entire bowl in my bag I guess I'd rather have a bowl of things I like then having to throw it out.

Besides if you don't want your house tp'd you'd better have the goods

You can buy coupon books from Krisy Kreme, and the kids take the coupon to the store and trade them in for a free doughnut. Then there's absolutely no candy around!

That's a wonderful idea, as it doesn't have to be KK. Thanks!

We had an older neighbor-lady that liked to give out little boxes of raisins and pennies each year.
She was well respected by our parents, so we kids suffered through it.

Like mal mentioned above, you could give out little toys, you know, like stuff that you might find in a gumball machine.
I remember novelty erasers and water-squirting rings were popular when I was a kid.

Okay, Bill, I'll give you a Peanut Butter Cup. In fact, I'll give you two, just because I hate odd numbers.

And guccilvr, I'll give you two as well

But nobody else gets any! All the rest are for me!
