How about the assholes in the library that don't stop talking...
I am sitting in the library at school, and these assholes won't stop talking!!! It is a library, you shouldn't make noise, which they are making plenty of. I just wondered if anybody else has had problems with people with blatant disregard for other people and rules.
|
Hope you have the avatars turned off, shouldn't be looking at naked people in the library. :D
|
ARRRGGGGGGHHHH!!!! The size of the group just doubled!!! Will the madness ever stop???

and where is the librarian to shush them?

Ya know, it's pretty common in college for ingorance and disrespect to run loose. I hated it when I was in school trying to find a quiet place to study. Headphones helped a lot. I feel your pain.
Its best to just ignore it or move rather than looking like a total asshole and saying something about it though. Fuck em. |

I'd rather be the asshole and say something as opposed to just sit there and let it continue to happen. If the librarian didn't help, there's some serious issues going on. |
You're in a library -- why is it being an asshole asking people to quiet down?
|
i have that problem at the library at school all the time, i never know if it is better to tell them to shut up, or just go move somewhere else.
|
The library I frequent is rife with this kind of abuse. Unfortunately, the elderly librarian is wheelchair bound, so the younger punks really abuse the computers and such.
There is also a real homeless problem. Several times I've gone in to the lav take a leak and seen some gnarly old vagrant stripped to the waist, having a nice sponge bath in the sink. |

harsh! my uni had tons of security. now i'm glad it did, not sure i want to walk in on that! |
Blowgun and valium-tipped darts.

For me it was bad in high school. You could never get work done in the library at my school. But in college its been another story. I haven't run into any problems at the library with "silly" students making too much noise. I dunno maybe i got lucky
|
At my college's library there's a "quiet flooor", but anywhere else it's ok to talk, as long as you're respectful about it. But one time I remember this guy had a 20 minute conversation about football on the quiet floor, and people were getting pretty pissed at him.
|
We have the same problem in both of our main campus libraries. It's louder than shit in those places, because everyone goes there to "study".

There are people today in the same place talking on their phones. There is a sign up that says "Please, take calls in the hall!" I guess that's not enough notice, or too much of a request.
|
if you don't bother to report them and keep the library management on their toes of keeping the peace, then you are as much of the problem...
|
At my old college the top two floors of the library were the quiet study floors. It was never a problem with too much noise up there, although the lower floors were way too noisy for a library.
|
if the people in my library are loud, which doesn't happen often, I have this thing (so does Lasereth) where I end up taking things into my own hands. Usually something along the lines of "can you be quiet please?" if they keep being loud, "can you shut the fuck up?" and if it persists, "what's your problem?" and end up moving or something. usually the first line works pretty well. if they try to verbally resist, explain to them the rules of a library. that always owns them pretty good.
|
man yeah ive actually been the talker so sad. ive stoped tho now im quiet in the library, which is wierd cuz i got urge to just scream there but like at home i want silence.
|
Yeah just getting their attention and asking if they can keep it down should work for most people. I know because I've been that person before, sometmies even when you think you're talking real low you just don't realize your voice is carrying throughout the library. A friendly reminder from someone else doesn't bother me and it embarrased me plenty to shut me up nice and quickly.
As for librarians, there's really nothing of the like at our libraries on campus. There are people working check out and reshelving sometimes, but thats it for a huge library. One security guard late at night at the door too. So its pretty much dependent on the students themselves. |
where in the library are/were you?
there are more or less public spaces where people can and will talk but not in the stacks, usually--around the computer terminals/card catalogue is usually not good for quiet..computer labs--cafes, if there are any, create zones of yak around them. if you are in the stacks, or in a carel etc., then i woudl be shameless and tell them to shut up or go somewhere else. |
You know what - it's a frigging library! Why should people have to be asked to quiet down? Is there no respect anymore? What, Rodney died, so fuck everybody else? If the guy/gal next to you is too rude to keep it quiet, do him/her a favor - start repeating everything he/she says OUT LOUD for everyone else to hear.

How about the assholes who use library computers to post on TFP when there are no free compuers left....yeah I should get up
