Those seasonal scents...
Good morning everyone!
Today is Tuesday, I don't have class until 2.15pm, so I slept in until 9. There isn't a cloud in the sky, it's 32*C (90*F) outside, a tiny, slight breeze every now and then. It's very quickly approaching summer here in the southern hemisphere. The whole house is opened up, every window and door wide open to let the air in. And the day really kicked off with me smelling lots of the things that make up summer for me. Sunscreen, juice, flowers, salt water, those things are pretty typical of summer for most people. Summer for me is also fly spray in the house, dust and cigarette smoke in the air and an ice-cold beer at 10pm on the porch, petrol fumes on a hot road, and general flowery smells at midnight outside. The smell of shaving cream in the morning in a hot, steamy, sunny bathroom is also a big one, that kicks my mind into summer every time! So whether you're approaching summer, or winter, what are those smells that really make it that season, and distinguish it from the last? |
That icy scent of snow coming combined with pine really gets me started, unfortunately I live in the desert right now... can't wait to get back to MI.

winter:
the smell of snow that can tell you it's coming (or falling nearby) pine trees cinnamon spring: flowers blooming rain fresh cut grass summer: fresh cut grass salt water at the ocean when we go for our vacation fall: fallen leaves (I love the smell of them) rain |
This is the time of year in upstate NY with the most distinctive scent. It's a very deep earthy scent, the smell of decaying leaves and damp rich earth. It's such a nice part of fall here.

Fall is perhaps the most richest scent for the northeast; the turning maple leaves give a very sweet smell that linger in the air for a few days. It's only a few days before the cold crisp air of autumn comes after that.

The smell of rain coming in tinged with the ozone scent of lightning is great too...

Cut pine trees that are being sold by a close high school - christmas is officially on its way when I see those trees.
Summer - the smell of watermelon - it keeps better and better the hotter it gets And our monsoon season - the smell of rain all day long, then after the storm too. |
Getting into fall here, and the air just smells crisp. It's hard to explain it.
And my neighbors (well, across from my parents house) have a wood burning stove, that really reminds me of fall/winter. I love that smell. |
