Commercials... Best, Worst or just plain Odd
After viewing the McDonald's thread regarding the damned Chicken Selects commercials, I was inclined to start this thread. What are your favorite or least favorite commercials, or just ones that totally threw you off. One person had commented that advertising was going downhill these days. But I disagree. There have ALWAYS been bad commercials... you just need to pick out the good ones.
A current favorite of mine and Combatmedicjen's is the new Toyota commercial where the tire is jsut going around and having a life. It rolls down the road, and around town. It trick or treats with some kids (dressed as a ghost with a sheet over it), and after it turns around to leave the doorway, the sheet falls off. It's a very cute and very creative commercial. There are some other decent ones on right now. But I'll leave them for others to post about. |

I always love most of the Bud light and Miller light commercials. They have great ideas, and always seem to be amusing. I think the NFL Ref bit is getting out of hand now, but the first couple were amusing.
Football games always seem to bring out the best in ads, with the Superbowl being the official start of the TV commercial season. |

I saw a Ford Mustang ad the other day that blew me away, because it was a total homage to "Field of Dreams" (voice tells man to build a baseball diamond in his cornfield, dead ballplayers show up to play). Only this is case, the guy builds a sports car track in his cornfield, and the dead guy appearing out of the corn is Steve McQueen, lifted digitally right out of "Bullit," the classic car chase movie. Not a word of dialog. It was amazing.

My all time favorite is the cat herders. There is Geico one out now that is making fun of the reality shows and it's really funny. I was sitting with my wife the first time it came on and we both though it was another real show that was going to start. It's called small house or something. I've only seen it twice, so I don't think it comes on very often.

There's a Prince of Persia: Sands of Time commercial that I really like where a DJ is spinning while gameplay footage is going on. The music is synced with the actions of the prince. It's pretty slick.
I also like the Fox Sports commercials of the guy catching the tree and the cliff diver diving into the dirt. Sick, yeah, but really freaking funny. |

The best commercial ive seen is the one with the guy running on the treadmill, then he slips, falls, and the treadmill throws him into a shelf, and the shelf falls on him. When i saw that, i couldnt stop laughing. I forgot what the commercial was for though.

and Twins. My favorite commercial right now, is for Progresso soup. It has two American's practicing their Japanese while having their meal. Cracks me up every time. and Twins.

Old farts have to speak up every now and then.
BEST: Husband and wife lying together in bed. Husband is in pain. He whines, "I can't believe I ate the whoooooole thing." Wife answers, "You ate it, Ralph." Anybody over 35 from America will smirk when they recall that one.

What I don't get are the commercials for Carls Junior with the messy, drippy burgers. This does NOT make me want one. I can't see why anyone would want some food that is advertised to drip all over the place and just generally be a big mess.

The best is Cog. Hands down.
http://194.29.64.17/thecog/movie.html No special effects, all one shot, no editing. Took 606 takes to get it right. And every part you see is a part in the car. |

Recently, I've found myself constantly repeating that lady on the Pizza Hut commercial about "rrrippin' and dippin'!"
Otherwise, the best commercials are the fake ones on SNL: "Oops I crapped my pants!" or "Huggies Thongs" or "Hamburger Helper - Antibacterial" or the one for disposable, one-time-use tiolets.

All commercials suck.
I especially hate the goddamn McDonald's commercials. The "I'm lovin it" crap. Ugh, annoying. Who the hell came up with that, and WHY did they think it would actually work? It's corny, lame... the commercials are stupid: a guy and his friend run out of gas, they get out and push the car. On the left is a gas station, on the right, a McDonald's. Oh, guess what direction they push their car into? IT'S GODDAMN FAST FOOD, not a story of courage, hope, or inspiration.

Oh, I also hate commercials that ruin songs for me forever.
Buick using Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll". I hate that song now. Fuck you, Buick. I never had the intention on buying one in the first place, but I'll definitely make it a point to never buy one now!

LOL Happy fun ball and Colon blow!
Do you remember "Ass don't stink" in the spray can? Or that machine that you cram up your butt that would translate flatulence into intelligent conversation (can't remember the name)? Makes me wonder how real commercials can even stand to take themselves seriously. p.s. ScottKuma, that link didn't work for me- anyone else get it to work?
