Spelling of the word "yeah."

"Yeah" or "yea," which is it? I would have to say "yeah." "Yea" is an obsolete form of "yet." Phonetically, it would also be more correct to spell it "yeah." It's just a small pet peeve of mine, and thought I'd bring it up here since it is used often.

i spell it "yeah", therefore, that is how you spell it :)

i think it depends on the use of it, that may be two different words.

yeah, i got into harvard!!! excitement

yea, i got busted for looking at porn.

do you pronounce the "h" or not? i'm confused now! thanks tspikes :(

Redjake 10-05-2004 05:17 PM

well, I always say "yeah" because "yea" looks like it should be pronounced "YEE!"

the "H" in "yeah" makes you say "yeh" and "ah" together, forming "yeah."

if you leave the "H" out, you just have the "yeh" or "yee" part and it just doesn't make sense.

the_marq 10-05-2004 05:27 PM

I've always gone with: ya

Jimellow 10-05-2004 05:29 PM

I like to use, "Yea." The H seems unnecessary, unless of course I'm writing a paper or something for class.

To me, "ya" seems uncaring for some reason.. Kind of like they are responding out of necessity, but that they don't really have an opinion or care greatly about what they are responding to.

Destrox 10-05-2004 05:42 PM

Yeah, Yea, Ya, Yah, Yup, Yeh...

Of those, I prefer yeah.

Mephisto2 10-05-2004 06:02 PM

Yeah.

I think you'll find that is the most common spelling.

I always "hear" the spelling "ya", "yah" as having a strong A at the end.
"Yea" simply "sounds" like the Old English word to me (sounds like yee).

So I would go with Yeah.

Personal preference I suppose.

"ya" is not short for yeah. "ya" is slang for you. (i.e. I'll put it on ya)

maleficent 10-05-2004 07:09 PM

I had way too many nuns in grammar school, I can still feel the ruler whenever I said the word YEAH -- instead of Yes, Sister. Writing out the word? Shouldn't happen... :D

k1ng 10-05-2004 07:39 PM

I spell it like "yeah."

I always thought that "yea" was pronounced as "yay," but the general consensus seems to say that its pronounced as "yee," so maybe im wrong...

I think everybody is thinking of "ye," old English for "you." You are right. I've also seen people spell "yay" (as in an expression of joy) "ya." Now that's just straight up stupid.

Grancey 10-05-2004 09:00 PM

According to Meriam Webster "yeah" is pronounced "yeh" and "yea" is pronounced "yay"

Fremen 10-05-2004 09:46 PM

Like they've mentioned above, 'yea' is pronounced 'yay', as in, "All those in favor of passing the so-and-so bill into law, say 'yea'.
Those against, say 'nay'".
'Yay' is what you yell out when you're excited about getting a blow-job.
'Yeah' is a slap on the mouth from your hardline father trying to instill manners into your uncouth ass.

;)

Thanks to Dave Chapelle, it is now spelled and pronounced "Yeeaaaaaaaahhhhh!"

You use the word "yeah" in papers? ;)

feelgood 10-06-2004 10:13 AM

I got 3 different ways....

Yeah, Yea, and Ya

Yeah is used professionally.
Yea is not professional
And ya is used when I'm stoned

Yeah, it's not unlike the database to crash like that
Yea, it's kinda stupid that the puck went off the board like that
Yaa man! I'm soooooooooo stoned!

gondath 10-06-2004 10:57 AM

Yea is not to be confused with yeah at all. Yea is pronounced yay and has a completely different meaning. You can find it all the way back in the Bible.

majik_6 10-07-2004 08:17 AM

I have to agree with the "yeah" is slang for yes, where as "yea" is an exclamatory expression of joy.
