This no lunch nonsense is not good. Especially if you're still trying to lose weight.

Why can't you take a lunch? I understand a busy and demanding job, but a person needs to refuel. Take a lunch! Lock your door (if youre lucky to have one), put your phone off the hook and turn off email. And take your lunch.

What's making your hours too long? Are you pushing yourself, or is that the norm for your job?

Hey at least you are (probably) getting paid for it.

As a Ph.D. student in microbiology, I'm expected to work 60-70 hours a week just for the hell of it. The only compensation we get is a measly stipend that isn't even enough for one person to live on, much less a family (wife was recently laid off and is having no luck finding a new job).

I keep wondering why I am still here, but I am too far into it at this point to walk away.

Grad school: it's not just a job, it's an indenture!

When I can't leave the office for lunch, my friend always says, "A guy has to eat when he's hungry", and that is sort of the call to leave I guess. You got to take care of yourself is nothing else.

I would think they'd be legally obliged to give you some sort of a break, wouldn't they?

In ohio, the law says for every 3 hours of work you do you are entitled 1, 10 minute break. I am not sure if its state law or federal law.

But obviously new job, new pay? probably... may not be the best idea to start bringing up laws of how you deserve this and that... I'd stick it out for awhile and then after like, a month or 5 weeks or so, bring up that this shit is killing you and if something could be done to help fix the problem.

A lot of times you can also fall into the trap of suffering from the tyrany of the urgent. You'll find yourself dealing with things that are URGENT URGENT URGENT but avoiding or putting off those things that are important. Set good daily priorities, review them with your supervisor, and this takes a bit of courage, but you should point out that things on the lower end of priority schedule may end up not getting done unless you get some help.

I work in consulting and there are always peaks and valleys of project related work. During the peaks, I find I run on adrenaline for two to three months then you start to get sluggish. You need the valleys to recover, recoup and recharge for the next effort. Normal daily work load gets dealt with effectively in the manner that I've descibed above. Keep your composure and work with your supervisor to make sure that he/she understands what is getting done and what isn't based on common understanding of priorities.

Good luck Strange.... You'll make it through.

as a manager or supervisor it's hard to take the time for breaks, but you need to do it. do the extra for a bit, then take your lunches for a bit...

it just takes a moment to walk away from your desk. the world should not topple with you not at the helm for a few hours...

Umm, I also think there are Federal laws that require your full time employees to take
breaks. If it's a personal choice, that's one thing, but if you're forced to not
have a real break, you could do something about that. Like getting Jim Hightower
to kick ass for you.

no one forces me not to have a break, I just dont have time. Its not like anyone tells me I cant leave my desk, I just always seem to be snowed under.

I don't know what you do, but I am a product designer/engineer. Sometimes I just have to get up and go out to the shop. This gives me a chance to rest my eyes and brain. If you can't leave any earlier than you do, take a few short breaks during the day. And by all means, don't get in the habit of skipping lunch.
