Speaking of children

Quote:

This be the verse

They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another's throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don't have any kids yourself.

Philip Larkin
I want to add that I don't subscribe to this point of view, but am taking the opportunity to post one of my favourite poems.

Personally, I'd like about four kids myself. :)

I'd like a large family as well. I grew up with 5 sisters and one brother, and I learned a lot of things early on because of that; mainly to appreciate certain things more than maybe someone raised in a small family.

Very cool poem.

I doubt I could handle four children and I think between the both of us it's a physical impossibility but I guess we could give it a shot.

Have all the kids you want. Someone has to uphold the quota.

Sad truth, imho, is that we all have issues from our childhood that carry over to our adult relationships. My kids will too. But that is no reason to not have any. Besides, it's lots of fun screwing them up *sarcasm*.

My most concise advice for you folks contemplating children is this:

RAISE THEM.
*Don't just provide for them.
*Don't be emotionally terrified of your own children.
*Tell them "no."
*Tell them you love them.
*Look upon discipline as an OPPORTUNITY to teach your child how to behave in social situations.
*If you have to plan "quality time," then you've missed the point.
*Forget all those sports cars you planned to own and trips you planned to take; your new responsibility is to your child (NOT yourself anymore).
*Babies grow into children. If you don't want screaming teenagers, then don't have babies.
*Teach them RESPONSIBILITY (the ability to do the right thing even when no one is looking).
*If you teach them not to touch things in gift shops, then you are NOT crushing their little spirit of self-expression. Rather, you are teaching them respect for other people's stuff.

You all may add more as you see fit.

We all have issues we carry with us from childhood - it's kind of the nature of the beast - but even though the experiences I had as a kid left me with some "baggage," they also made me who I am, and I (finally) like myself. Every "bad" thing that my parents did that I resented them for for years and years was really a lesson that shaped my identity. I don't resent them for anything any more, and I'm grateful for having them as my parents. "I'm going to fuck them up" is kind of a cop-out reason to not have kids, IMHO.

Poem has a point. The older I get, the more I see my father in myself.

Shoot me now.

i was actually told that my wife will turn out to be just like her mother and i married her anyway :lol

one more thing the part about forgetting about all those trips "I" would take arent out of the ? cause i always wanted to be able to take trips with the kiddies

I want 12 kids, but my wife isn't going for that.

I tried to compromise by suggesting she could be 1st wife in a harem, but that isn't going to well either.

So far, I've got her agreeing up to 3. I'm hoping they'll be like Lay's Potato Chips.

shortynickel 09-14-2004 08:15 AM

well smooth...my wife only wanted a max of 2...after our first she said i wouldnt mind having more then 2 lol...now she is prego again and says why did i want more lol
