Genesis Lives!

The Genesis mission is not a write off!

Two of the three capture wafers survived! NASA confirmed it last night. CNN is reporting it now. (I love xm radio!)

CNN expects a telephone interview with the The NASA Director shortly.

The video clip of that f-er coming down out of the sky was very cool. It would have been even better had it worked according to plan (obviously) but it was still very cool. 193 miles per hour and SMAAAAAAASH into the desert....:D Loved it!!!

Haven't we had enough Phil Collins??

It's good we salvaged some of the data.

crap I thought this thread was about Phil Collins ;)

K-Wise 09-10-2004 03:03 PM

My Dreamcast got pawned :(

Asta!!

Baldrick 09-10-2004 03:08 PM

Great news! (and I love my XM too... ;))

I'm very excited to hear what data they can pull out of it. Even though the footage was fascinating, I was really sad that the Genesis recovery didn't work.

shortynickel 09-10-2004 04:26 PM

what info did it bring back? lol

Paradise Lost 09-10-2004 07:54 PM

The beast spent a couple years in orbit around the sun (like it would orbit something
else :P) and collected solar particles that don't usually make it to the surface of the
Earth. They supposedly picked up ALOT of them. It's suppose to study the origins
of our Solar System and most likely our Universe. If you can extrapolate particles and
find out the origins of the Universe, that has to be some crazy algorithm or theory or
something. Geesh.

It's too bad the parachute system malfuctioned, but damn. A terminal speed crash and it still brought home usable data from a delicate system. That's some damned good engineering.

I was thinking how long before some cheesy movie comes out, about the third canister mutating some animals.

Have they figured out why the parchute did not deploy?

water_boy1999 09-14-2004 09:26 AM

Awesome pic. Glad they were able to get some use out of it after the crash.

I read that the initial prevailing theory is that the battery that was supposed to deploy the chute(s) overheated at the beginning of the mission. I'll look around for a link to see if I can find anything more on it.

hokieian 09-14-2004 01:59 PM

nice pic, BTW. I haven't seen that one. I think I'll make it my desktop for a while.

majik_6 09-17-2004 07:27 AM

I can't believe I wasn't alone in thinking this thread was about Phil Collins.

I probably wouldn't have even clicked the link if I had known the truth! :)

But either way, I'm glad they're going to be able to get some information out of it.

Man, that thing seems to have an invisible touch.
