Aryan Nations Founder Richard Butler Dies

Wed Sep 8, 6:29 PM ET

By NICHOLAS K. GERANIOS, Associated Press Writer

SPOKANE, Wash. - Richard G. Butler, the notorious white supremacist who founded the Aryan Nations and was once dubbed the "elder statesman of American hate," has died at the age of 86, authorities said Wednesday.

Butler died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Hayden, Idaho, sheriff's Capt. Ben Wolfinger told The Associated Press. It was not known when he died; his body was found in his bed Wednesday morning.

"Everything appears to be natural," said Wolfinger, of the Kootenai County, Idaho, sheriff's department.

The Aryan Nations lost its church and 20-acre compound in northern Idaho in 2000 after a $6.3 million civil judgment led to a bankruptcy filing. He moved into a house bought by a supporter in Hayden, and made few public appearances in recent years because of failing health.

But in July he rode in the back of a pickup truck that was dragging the flag of Israel during a parade by about 40 of his followers through downtown Coeur d'Alene, 30 miles east of Spokane.

Butler, a longtime admirer of Adolf Hitler and white supremacist religious teaching, had moved to Idaho in the early 1970s, claiming later that he was impressed by its high percentage of white residents. To the dismay of many locals, the region became known as a place hospitable to white supremacist groups.

Butler's church held that whites are the true children of God, that Jews are the offspring of Satan and that blacks and other minorities are inferior.

The compound drew skinheads, ex-convicts and others from the fringes of society. A "whites only" sign was placed at the gate, and Nazi symbols decorated the grounds.

Over the years, Butler's disciples included some of the most notorious figures in the white supremacist movement, but authorities were largely unable to tie Butler to crimes by his supporters.

In the 1980s, followers who called themselves The Order committed a series of armored car robberies and bombings, and murdered Denver talk radio host Alan Berg. In 1985, 10 Order members were convicted of racketeering and other charges.

In a 1999 report, the FBI (news - web sites) said the goal of Aryan Nations was to forcibly take five states — Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Washington and Montana — and form an Aryan homeland.

Butler's undoing began in 1998, when Aryan Nations security guards chased a car they thought had fired a gun at them. It was apparently a backfire or firecracker.

The guards fired repeatedly at the car, shooting out a tire and forcing it into a ditch. One of them grabbed the driver, local resident Victoria Keenan, jabbed her ribs with a rifle butt and put a gun to her head.

Keenan and her son, Jason, sued Butler, arguing his organization had been negligent in its supervision of the guards. In 2000 they won a $6.3 million judgment. They were aided by the Southern Poverty Law Center, which called Butler the "elder statesman of American hate."

"They cannot run me out of northern Idaho with my tail between my legs," Butler said after the judgment was announced.

But Butler filed for bankruptcy and the Keenans gained possession of the compound. They sold it to the Carr Foundation, a human-rights group that demolished the buildings and donated the property to a college.

Butler, born in Colorado and trained as an aeronautical engineer, claimed he became admirer of Hitler while serving the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He said Hitler "led a nation, a division of our race, to fight for the life of our race."

The thread title seems to sum up my feelings about this guy. The world need less people like him.

Freaky thing is, I was watching a documentary about racism on the History Channel the other week and I saw this guy spewing hatred bullcrap, I thought to myself, "I wish he'd die" and lo' behold, he died.

I have to agree with you whole heartedly. That fucker needed to die, I just wish it had been a painfully long and excrutiating death.

Paradise Lost 09-08-2004 07:34 PM

This is one of the few times you can be all "Yay!" that someone died.

basmoq 09-08-2004 08:20 PM

I'd second that poop remark

09-08-2004 09:02 PM

good riddance indeed!

The Phenomenon 09-08-2004 10:36 PM

Yeah well good riddance I guess indeed.

Stare At The Sun 09-08-2004 10:43 PM

What a double standard. If this were a black panther leader, or someone from the ADL, everyone would be horribly upset. Its wrong for "whitey" to stand up for his race, but yet, when anyone else does it, its the right thing.

Just so you know, the last part, about the "southern poverty law center" is just a jewish group that had every intention of destroying the life of this man, and many others.

I will be called a racist, and everything else for my response, but I can sum up my feelings on this in three simple words;

Heritage not hate.

I am proud of my heritage, and my culture.

Rdr4evr 09-08-2004 10:58 PM

It is unfortunate that he died peacefully. But I am glad he is dead either way.

I agree 100% completely with you.

I'd say good riddance if he was a Black Panther leader as well.

Fire 09-09-2004 12:25 AM

right then- we need to find his grave and deface it with a star of david- that should help even the old score a bit- seriously- my wifes mom was murdered by an aryan brotherhood member- in idaho- and all I can say is one down, many to go- these people are not about heritage or pride they are about the lowest kind of hate, and deserve much pain and suffering-

tropple 09-09-2004 03:16 AM

supremacists/separatists/fundies - Miix them together and what do you get?

Well, that depends on which nozzle is in the sausage grinder.

Its not about "stand up for your race"
Its about:
Butler's church held that whites are the true children of God, that Jews are the offspring of Satan and that blacks and other minorities are inferior.
For that he should burn in hell.

BTW: the term "race" is BS

The Phenomenon 09-09-2004 04:19 AM

Pacifier, does he not have the right to believe that he is superior because of his race?

Because its clear that you think yourself superior to him simply because you do not subscribe to that. Just because you are not in agreement with him, does not make him any less of a human being with rights, and it does not make you right. Who are you to judge, when all you stand on is your own moral code that you subscribe to, just as he has?

Everybody has equal rights. Even White supremacist assholes.

sure, but then I have the right to call him an ignorant asshole.
my tolerance usually ends were others are intolerant.

Yes, but He denied others those "equal rights" which makes him an asshole. frankly I don't see much difference between your point and mine. perhaps I was a bit angry, but racists make me angry.

The Phenomenon 09-09-2004 04:41 AM

I'm just saying equal treatment goes both ways right through the bank :)

Mephisto2 09-09-2004 04:47 AM

Every death is regretable.

I'm not happy he's dead.

But he was a bad person and so I won't mourn his passing.

Mr Mephisto

lurkette 09-09-2004 06:02 AM

There's a huge difference between being proud of one's heritage (hanging a tartan on your wall, celebrating Shakespeare) and insisting that your heritage is so superior to others' that you deserve special rights that they should not have. I can't believe you can even THINK of defending this person and his views. This man was not "standing up for his race," he was promoting the hatred of pretty much every other race. He was a fear monger, a hate monger, and a paragon of ignorance and mean spirit. The SPLC does a lot of good, and your identification of it as a "Jewish group" whose intention is to destroy lives speaks volumes for your paranoid mindset.

I disagree with you not because you are white, or because you are racist, but because you make no sense.

ditto for me. it's another one of my fellow human beings who is no longer with us... even if it was negative he still contributed something, for there needs to be the negative to the positive.

Cynthetiq, you are indeed my hero. Those are my thoughts exactly.

The very act of silencing someone's ideas is infinitely more heinous than anything that might be found in those ideas. I feel truly, truly sorry for the people alive today who firmly believe they should only learn from those who think similarly to themselves.

People like that are already dead.

its a shame that discussions of 'race' continue to remain so restrained here.

What do you mean by this?

tecoyah 09-09-2004 02:13 PM

Another open slot on Jerry Springer......what a Pity.

Lebell 09-09-2004 02:26 PM

I don't believe anyone is saying that one shouldn't take pride in who they are (although why one should be *proud* to be something they didn't have a choice in is beyond me).

Rather, it is that some people actively don't like this particular man and the way he chose to express that "pride".

As for myself, I am sad that any person could be so hate filled as this man apparently was.

Y2KDREAD 09-09-2004 03:39 PM

some people just deserve what's coming to them

And more of a shame to see your response and yet not indulge us with your thoughts on the subject. Spice it up, or start a new thread topic. I'd like to hear your views.

As for me, I am torn between never wanting to wish death upon anyone, and realizing that this is one planet that didn't need a man like this in existence. When your extreme ideals are shared with others and these ideals, in turn, bring about death, pain and suffering onto other humans, you do not belong on this planet. Sure, you all have the right to believe what you want to. I am not arguing that. But when you have this much hate inside of you, this much intolerance for other races and cultures, then I can barely dredge up the energy to acknowledge your existence.

viejo gringo 09-09-2004 06:03 PM

With the horror Hitler reigned on this world, even his own people, I can not
believe anyone in their right mind would admire him...

He won't be missed---

bacon_masta 09-09-2004 06:51 PM

i don't remember who said this, some famous person (identify if you know, and can give the exact quote) but it went something like this..."i'll disagree with your opinion until death, but i'll also defend your right to have it until death." no, i don't mourn his passing, he may have deserved more, but this is the land of the free. i am not a racist, i don't even believe in the concept of "race", but based on constitutional rights he did what was legal and even encouraged in this country. we need less intolerance, and we need fewer people like Richard Butler, but just because he was wrong doesn't mean he didn't have a right to be.

CoachAlan 09-09-2004 11:23 PM

I would wish him enlightened long before I would wish him dead.

And by the way, the comments I see in this thread are, in my opinion, demonstrative of the very best the internet has to offer:

The internet has helped to break down walls, to bring people of different cultures and philosophies together. On the net, you can't judge a person by the color of their skin, but only by content. Even Stare At The Sun's race is a mystery. Sure, we could make a guess, but we don't know for sure, and so we have to judge by content.

Over time, we get used to thinking of people in these terms. When getting to know someone, we get used to looking at ideas instead of the containers those ideas come in. And in getting to know these people from all over the world, we start to understand each other a little better. We start to see each other's value, each other's contribution, rather than each other's differences.

"Tolerance" is bullshit. You tolerate someone who is chewing with their mouth open. You tolerate someone who is walking too slowly in front of you. You tolerate someone who has been looking at the menu for five minutes and won't freaking order. You don't "tolerate" someone's cultural differences. You ACCEPT their differences. You EMBRACE their differences.

The internet, as evidenced by the posts on this board, is helping us do that. Long live the TFP!

09-10-2004 12:16 AM

Doesn't seem fair that he died "peacefully" in his sleep.... extremism in any form is dangerous.

That means a lot to me, Mr Mephisto. I've read countless posts of yours and have come to respect your opinion. Thank you so much for taking the time to write a kind word about my words.

Very well said.

However...I think that before you can embrace, you have to learn to accept. Before you learn to accept, you have to learn to tolerate. I think we're getting there. We're not there yet...but we're getting there.

MSD 09-10-2004 08:54 PM

It's nice that everyone can be PC about it, but this guy was the embodiment of hatred, his words and actions inspired hatred and brought about murders nad violence by others. If he was struggling to stay afloat in the ocean, I'd cut his arms off and hold his head underwater rather than help him back to shore. If he could have, he would have killed everyone who he thought was inferior. You can't enlighten someone like that, he deserved to die and it's a shame it happened so peacefully.

welshbyte 09-10-2004 09:11 PM

I'm certainly not sad that he has died but I'll save any feelings of hatred for people who are alive, although i hope i never have to hate anyone at all.

I've read the news, and the mentally processed it and didnt feel much (i never knew he existed before i read this thread, and now he doesnt exist, whats changed for me?). Now i can forget about it and use my brain for something more worthwhile like think about what i'm having for breakfast tomorrow.

Hatred breeds hatred, even when its directed at dead people.

It generally is phrased along the lines of "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." and is usually said to come from Voltaire. I have always heard it comes from a book called "The Friends of Voltaire" (by some lady) - don't have time to google it right now, shouldn't be too hard to find though - who was basically trying to come up with something to really catch the essence of Voltaire.

Anyway, Voltaire is not supposed to have ever actually ever said it, and it never appears in any of the surviving writings. Sorry, but that's the best answer I can give you.
