Any Scotch drinkers out there?

I saw the thread for Favorite wine and I got to thinking, why not Favorite Scotch? I'm not too fond of wine, I'll drink it, but when I want to sit around and be social I prefer a nice glass of Scotch.

My favorite is Tamnavulin 12 yr. Light amber color, with a slight peaty flavor and very mild from the first sip to the last. You can smell the peat in it when you bring your lips to the glass. Finishes as nice as it starts, smooth and flavorful.

How about you? What is your favorite Scotch?

I prefer GlenLivet, Highland Park, Aberlour or GlenMorangie for single malt. Probably go with GlenMorangie as my favorite though.

For blended, Chivas is good but I find it highly overrated, maybe it's just the rebel in me that wants to go against the grain. DeWar's is ok, Cutty's is a little too bland, won't touch Johnnie Walker. The best blended in my opinion is probably Whyte and McKay, although good old Claymore and J&B aren't too disgusting.

Never had Tamnavulin though.

Love good Scotch, never been drunk on it. I savor it and sip it nice and slow, like Cognac.

Now Vodkas, or Gins are a good getting drunk liquor, but the best is Rum. A nice Pusser's and Pineapple Juice or a strong Zombie (a REAL Zombie hard to find someone that makes a true Zombie).... mmmm now that's a good happy high.

I wish I could get my hands on some Scotch, from what I've read, if anything,
Tamnavulin is the way to go. But as of now I've given up drinking because it makes
me feel like what's really going on in your large intestines.

Talisker. Oban. Lagavulin.

That's it. And a piece of chocolate cake. This is my fav dessert now. A glass of Talisker with one cube and a rich, thick, and dark piece of chocolate cake.

A Glenmorangie or Macallan for me.

Of the major brands, Glenfiddich is my favorite. I find it to be so much bolder and richer than Glenlevit, and to me that's what scotch is supposed to be about.

I also regularly drink Dalmore Cigar Malt. It's a very dark amber color, and as the name implies it goes great with a cigar.

Mmmm, Pusser's. The best rum with the worst name. I haven't found anything to compare to Pusser's for a flavorful rum.

Balvenie Double Wood - very smooth and enticing! kinda pricey though

Heading to Mexico (5 miles) tomorrow to pick up a couple of bottles of Teachers scotch....I have at least one double with a little branch water every after noon..

...and for $12 US per liter its a great buy..

meembo 09-09-2004 06:20 PM

Oban. I tried it in a sampler meeting, and it stuck with me

OFKU0 09-09-2004 08:11 PM

Talisker is my first pick. My only comment is to purchase and learn to enjoy good scotch. Johnny Walker Red or Black. Can't even believe people actually drink that stuff.

I drink Glenfiddich when I have to slum it. 12 not 18. Or whatever.

oblar 09-09-2004 10:53 PM

hmm I like Isle of Jura and Glenfiddich for scotch.

if you include Bourbon in this then I really enjoy Woodford Reserve Distiller's Select. Nice flavor and doesn't break the bank (~35$ for 750ml). Mmm I think i will have some now :)

Hm.. must party with The Original King one day!
Talisker. Oban. Lagavulin are all on my mmmmm list. Of the thre I only have the Oban 14 year Single Malt in my liquir cabinet.

I recently bought a "sampler" set from Bowmore with 12,15,17,21 and Dark. I like them all, but it is very nice to start at 12 and experience how the whiskey changes as i move towards the 21 year old. At the moment the 17, 21 and Dark are on my "top list"

As much as I try, I can't decide on my most favorite Scotch. I like them all. I prefer single malts, although I haven't been known for rejecting blends.

The only one I probably can't drink is that pale stuff from the Isle of Jura. But I shouldn't blame the whisky for that; it must be because of the time when I drank a 10-years old bottle of Jura by myself, then tied a 5-pound stainless steel security chain around my neck, padlock and all, called everyone around me a moron and an idiot and a failure, then walked away in disgust and fell face first into some bicycles. Took me two days to learn to spell my name again after that.

Living in the bible belt, more specifically eastern NC, it's tough to get my hands on many different brands of scotch whiskey. Of what I've tried, I still find myself going back to the 12 year old Glenlivet. It's just tasty goodness.

ironman 09-10-2004 01:45 PM

Has to be Old Parr

Frowning Budah 09-11-2004 02:25 PM

I drink, but have never liked Beer or Whiskey or Scotch. I have tried what was suppose to be good brands of all of them and just never cared for them. So is it a developed taste or just a matter of preference?

radioguy 09-11-2004 02:40 PM

I would say it's a developed taste. My first taste, Famous Grouse, wasn't too memorable. Later, I gained more interest into scotch and actually did research on how scotch was made, what the different regions taste like and so on. I couldn't wait to buy another bottle of a kind I hadn't tried. Keep drinking......you'll like it! If you don't, I'm sure you can find somebody who would gladly take the scotch off your hands. :)

Shizukana 09-12-2004 11:23 PM

Oban on ice or in a flask is DAMN yummy.

Blackthorn 09-13-2004 05:08 AM

Lagavulin :D Double snifter, neat.

It's the aristocrat of Scotch whiskey. A bold, rich, peaty, smokey flavor from an Islay single malt that will blow your socks off if you really like scotch. I usually turn to the smooth burn of scotch when the weather gets cooler. It's coming...;)

Oban is a good beginner's scotch. If you are really interested in it you can almost certainly find a Scottish Pub in your area with a decent selection of scotch that you can use to build a taste test sampler. A wee dram of three to six of the finest from smooth and crisp all the way up to Lagavulin will give you an idea of the differnt flavors and characteristics. Good stuff...and TOK has it absolutely spot on. Get a good piece of chocolate cake to go with it. :)

Balvenie for me too, on the rocks. Dalmore 12 for "everyday".

all-time favorite: Morangie '76 (thank you, brendan!)
