killing the chinese, one click at a time...

http://p2pnet.net/story/2356

I wonder if these criminals will get a free ride in a van...
Quote:
Starting today, if a Chinese porn site is "clicked" more than 250,000 times, its owners could be jailed for life.

The sentence could be applied to anyone "engaged in the profit-oriented production and dissemination of pornographic materials through the Internet, mobile communication terminals and 'phone-sex' services," says the state news agency Xinhuanet here.

Reflecting a significant toughening-up of China's already strict anti-porn laws, "China's Supreme People's Court and Supreme People's Procuratorate jointly issued the interpretations Sunday on the application of law in handling criminal cases concerning the production, duplication, publication, sales and dissemination of electronic pornographic materials through the Internet, mobile communication terminals and phone-sex services," says the report.

"Depending on the seriousness of the cases, the sentences range from living under compulsory surveillance, detainment, taking into custody by the police, to various terms of imprisonment and life imprisonment," Xinhuanet states.

Nor will the new penalties be confined to people who use online porn for profit.

"[...]grave cases of non-profit production and dissemination of pornographic materials are also criminal and subject to punishment<' says the state agency.

"People who knowingly aid the production and dissemination of pornographic materials through the above-mentioned means are also culpable and will be punished."

In June, China's president Hu Jintao's issued instructions "to wage a people's war against pornography on the Internet".

I don't care if they can ever see porn as long as there are plenty of nekkid chinese women for _me_ to look at.

If we base our trade policies entirely on morals, we would be broke. And this doesn't just apply to the US.

Well they're not really killing them, just imprisoning them for life at the most.

I completely agree with you.

It is entirely possible to trade with a country, even an autocratic, communist state that invades its neighbours, massacres its citizens, executes more than any other nation, repeatedly threatens war with American allies etc.... without providing it with Most Favoured Nation status.

Russia proved what happens to a "communist" state that doesn't allow freedom for so long, then has leaks in the blanket over the peoples' heads. Let's hope that China suffers the same fate soon.

Won't Beijing be holding the next Olympics? As long as the authorities turn a blind eye to all the hookers working overtime and focus all their energies on internet porn...

That's why communism doesn't work. The Porn Industry is a billion dollar one in the States.

Social conservatism- restricting freedoms and rights so that people won't have to think about or acknowledge any touchy subjects.

So if I read that right, internet porn is free in China? That's not such a bad deal for the Chinese, unless of course you work in the porn industry...which is probably a bunch of people in a nation of over 1 billion.

I also keep wondering when China will learn incarceration is not the answer to all their problems?

People keep refering to China as communist. As much as we all would like to keep perpetuating this myth, and despite what the Communist Party says, and what Americans say, the Chinese economy isn't communist anymore. The government is autocratic and dictatorial, but not communist. I would like to encourage people to stop refering to china as such.
As far as massacring it's citizens... may I remind people about Kent State. At the time kent state happened, the American government had been around for near three hundred years. At the time that tiananmen occured, the Chinese government had been around for near fifty years.
In 2000, China excecuted ten times as many people as the US per capita.
I'm not sure what american allies china threatened to go to war with... Perhaps America just has a habit of allying with regions that China is at war with. (Is it the North's fault that certain European countries were helping the South?)
As far as invading it's neighbors, I'd chalk that one up to being a young state. Besides, they were liberating the oppressed Tibetan peasants from the tyrianies of the ruling class. Nothing the US hasn't done before. I doubt a more mature Chinese state would have done something like that.

OK, so I'm not sure if you're agreeing with my implied criticism of China, being sarcastic, actually defending China or a combination of all three!

:-)

Good point about China and Communism by the way. I simply included it as it used to be a bugbear for Americans.

Specificially to the points I raised.

Communist - well, as you say, centralized autocratic despotic dictatorship would be better.

Massacring citizens - 4 students killed by part-time soldiers does not really compare with thousands killed at a result of the express orders of the State.

Invading neighbours - Tibet. If you doubt a mature Chinese state would invade, then you are poorly mistaken. Look at the recent war games in the China Sea. Look at the continuing crack down on peaceful protest in Tibet. Look at the continuing crack down on the Falun Gong (a yoga group for God's sake!).

Threatening invasion of American allies - Taiwan (though, if you wish to be pedantic, I'm not entirely certain qualifies as an ally per se. Does it have to come to US aid if there is a military action?)

wow, someone else has heard about falun gong. sorry to take this off topic, but when i was in nyc, i talked with one of the groups holding a protest to help get an american citizen out of custody of the chinese gov't. I also had the chance to talk to a person who was imprisoned for practicing and he was going through, in waaayyyy more detail than i needed, a lot of the torture tactics they used on him. very moving and very scary...all that for a group of peaceful practitioners of something akin to yoga or just plain meditation...

interesting stuff.

Sorry for taking it way off topic

The only thing the war on Porn will do is the same thing war on drugs does. Make it more expensive and make criminals out of a lot more people. You can't stop something the people really want.

So what is wrong with this policy. Oh i get it, it came from China. So anything related to the chinese government is automatically evil. Fighting against porn is wrong because it is a human right violation. You people make me sick.

There was actually a Law & Order episode about it IIRC

This is the kind of worthless post that can get you banned.

How exactly is that useful debate. The post is about the next chinese policy against internet pornograph. And all of the replies are just China bashing.
