i say: tv ads. which one(s) pop into ur head?

for me, the answer is always nike. Their ad program is clearly one of the best, and they generally spend the most on it probably. But, its like their ads really are works of art. The rythm ads with basketball players tricking, the soccer cage matches, the guy chasign the chicken with the french announcer...just pure genius, i can almost play them all over in my head. for other companies, i remember ads, but they're more recently made ones, and i have to think about it to remember a good/decent one.

i was also wondering if nike has had an effect on my purchasing, and how much that effect is. i always generally buy nike bball sneaks, but i generally look for the ones that look pleasing to my eye, and i always limit myself to a price range. No way i'm spendign $200 for a pair of sneaks. I usually spend about $60-70 every year and a half for new sneaks (only cause they wear out by then, i put them through heavy use, and i always put it off until the last minute, my current ones are ripping out the back).

so i suppose its possibly i've been subconciously affected by the ads, and i find nikes aesthetically pleasing because their brand itself has been associated with this feeling of superiority and just plain...coolness. I certainly hope i'm nto that much of a blind consumer.

I also can't think of another brand rite now that the ads might even have hadt hat much of an effect on me. Fast food ads dont work cause i generally dont eat there ever, and if i do, i go to them randomly based on how close they are, or even the taste (Thank god for in & out, and del taco). Clothing as well, i usually jsut get my clothes on sale, so i dont really shop at any particular place. and i dont really buy much of anithing else.

thoughts on any other ad campaigns that u think might have affected u? i think the mastercard "priceless" campaign is qutie good and long-standing, but seriously, its been overused everywhere, even online, and who goes and gets a master card from that? i use visa.

AFLAC!!!!

That crazy duck and some of the ads that they have done are just ridiculously funny. The one with Yogi Bera is hysterical. The one where the ducky is on vacation and they show him in a lounge act at Vegas singing Danke shane(sp) with wayne newton...oh my god that was funny!!

The recent Nike Lance Armstrong commercials jump into my head. But thats probably because it was a cool commercial, and Im a fan of Lance Armstrong.

Its funny that some of the most remembered commercials are ones that dont even blatantly advertise for the company. Take the Lance ads, for instance. There is nothing in the commercial that advertises for Nike except for the Nike symbol at the end.

I think nike's always tried to do that, referring to their logo only at the end. Its part of their image-driven advertising, rather than focusing on the actual product. seems to work for them quite well.

I love that Starbucks Doubleshot commercial. The one where this band follows a guy around on his way to work singing about about him. Once he arrives at work, they start following another guy who is drinking the Doubleshot drink.

If I had way too much money, I would so hire a band like that to follow me around throughout my day. It probably would get old after an hour or so..

Ok, back to your question. I really don't think the ad makes me go to Starbucks any more often or buy their products at the grocery store more often. I go there and buy coffee, because I like coffee and they have convenient locations.

The Staples back to school commercials are pretty funny.. There's one that they have running now with Alice Cooper in it... and a little girl giving him a hard time because he said that School was out forever... and he gets all attitudey wiht her and says Summer, i said Summer.

Ya had to be there...it made me laugh...

Yeah the starbucks commercial with Survivor singin the parody of their own song is hilarious!!

I always like the incredibly badly made Mentos commericals "Mentos....the freshmaker!!!"

I think that a lot of the old classic tv ads (alka selzer.... "I can't believe I ate that whole thing") and many of the ones that have been shown during the superbowl comes to mind a lot. Of the commercials that are current, most anything that has a tune that gets stuck in your head.

Sort of off-topic rant.... I miss the old adcritic where you could just waste time watching old commercials.

I have Tivo... What are commercials?

ForwardtoDeath 08-20-2004 06:47 AM

I cant believe that nobody has mentioned the best commercial ever....The quiznos ad campaign.

Those little puppets singing off key and with broken english about toasted subs has to be one of the funniest and most memorable things I have ever seen. Those ads were simply brilliant.

maleficent 08-20-2004 06:58 AM

That Quiznos commercial annoys the stuffing out of me... But I remember the product... So I guess it workes

Other commercials I really like, I can never remember what they are advertising... There's a beer commercial that cracks me up whenever I see it, I can't recall what brand? Miller maybe? But it's got a really catchy song - ode to the wingman? It's a riot - -but not effective cause I have no idea what product tehy are advertising.

Annheiser Busch (if I spelled that right).. The "Real American Heroes" ads. I've seen/heard several good ones both on TV and Radio... I remember Mr. Goalhorn Button Presser by name, and can piece together the other songs but can't remember too many details.

I downloaded the entire set off of the web. The sites are taken down often, but it looks like they might still be here:
Bud Light Salutes Real Men of Genius

None, thank god.

A few years ago I decided that TV ads were far more annoying than I cared to deal with, and so (mostly) stopped watching TV.
The rare occasions I happen to be around it, I do my best to ignore it.

Bamrak 08-20-2004 10:26 AM

The GEICO ad that has the lizard singing Kung Fu Fighting has me hooked right now. I'll catch myself singing it for a day or so after it was on.. I was also a big fan of the Quizno's commercials even though initially they annoyed me.
