Rock-throwing kids anger 120,000 bees

Quote:
LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Kids throwing rocks stirred up more trouble than they bargained for when they dislodged a swarm of bees from an enormous hive built in the wall of a Southern California apartment building, authorities said on Friday.

An estimated 120,000 bees held residents of the apartment building and nearby homes hostage in Santa Ana, California after the children pelted their 500 pound (227 kg) hive with rocks on Thursday, Santa Ana Fire Captain Steve Horner said.

Several people, including firefighters, news reporters and a TV cameraman, reported being stung and at least two people were taken to a hospital with multiple stings, Horner said.

Firefighters cordoned off a four-block area to allow the bees to calm down and return to their hive.

An exterminator later fogged the hive and vacuumed out 40,000 dead bees, then set a trap for returning worker bees, of which about 80,000 were captured, Horner said.

The quarter-ton honeycomb, which may have accumulated inside the apartment wall for years, was so big it was threatening the structural integrity of the two-story building, Horner said.

Link is right here.

That is a big friggin be hive.

I like the image of people being held hostage by bees. What were their demands? That they have a large field of flowers planted for them?

I have a phobia of bees. Well, bees and wasps. It all goes back to when I was a young kid and a wasp got into my t-shirt and stung me repeatedly.

Now, almost 30 years later, I still unvoluntarily duck or jump when I hear something buzzing nearby.

120,000 bees. Shit...

I would imagine most of the hive is hidden in the wall. The kids probably threw rocks at a small bit that stuck out of it. I want pics so bad though!

seriously. they should all be killed. we'd all be better off if kids were tied up and never allowed to leave the house. I know I was never stupid as a kid

it never says if the kids got hurt or not, so, apparently they didn't get anything that they may or may not of deserved. either way, I'll bet you $0.37 everyone here has done something alot stupider than throw rocks at a bunch of mud stuck to the side of a building.

Just wait until the kids' parents sue the apartment manager for not doing something about the bees.. or not realising they're there.

That is what those little fucking idiots get. You play with fire, you're gonna get burnt. Or you play with bees, you're gonna get stung...or something.

And DAMN, a 500lb hive? Were these genetically engineered überbees?

Mal beat me to it, but...yeah. How did someone not know that these bees were there? This many bees, in a hive that large? I dunno...seems to me it's asking for trouble. And, of course, dumbass kids with rocks do = trouble.

I call these kids stupid, but I remember I did the same thing as a kid. The bee hive wasn't quite as big as that one, but I did get stung and ran inside crying. I was 5 or 6 I think.

I'm not saying those parents should sue, but something should have been done. A 500 lb bee hive is asking for trouble. Instead of the parents of those kids suing, I think the people who went to the hospital as a result of the bees could sue the apt building.

As long as it's just for damages and not some stupid 100-million dollar lawsuit...

I'm torn.. I think something should have been done.. but then.. I don't think we know all the details.

Anyways...

I heard the kids started throwing rocks to get rid of the bees after saying "Tut, Tut. It looks like Rain" didn't work.

Did the kids shake their muddy asses too? I think that's part of the ritual.
