TRENTON, N.J. - In a stunning declaration, Gov. James E. McGreevey announced his resignation Thursday and acknowledged that he had an affair with another man. "My truth is that I am a gay American," he said with his wife by his side at a nationally televised news conference.

"Shamefully, I engaged in adult consensual affairs with another man, which violates my bonds of matrimony," the twice-married father of two said. "It was wrong, it was foolish, it was inexcusable."

Just when you think you heard it all.....

Man, I feel sorry for his kids. If he felt he HAD to resign, he should have thought of something better to protect them. I've got no problem with what he did, its just his kids may. Even if they don't, they WILL hear about it from others.

His sexuality should have very little to do with this matter - he used and gave away very high and important jobs like they were presents for his lover. I read in the paper that he gave away a national security position to his inexperienced boyfriend who once fought in the Israeli army.

It's a shame that in this society a man's sexuality can outshine the fact that he compromised the security of the nation.

Because Sex is tawdry, and exciting, and good gossip fodder... The world as a soap opera...

I saw parts of the news conference finally, and what I am still having a hard time with -- is the "stand by your man" attitude of his wife... Sweetheart, he cheated on you, not with a bimbo, but with another man... not many women would put up with that... His parents were also at the press conference -- Daddy dearest, a former marine drill sergeant (if I remember correctly) wasn't looking all that pleased.

This guy is done in politics, and he was done before he resigned -- the gay thing seemed like the easy way out for him

I read that as Gay-American for some reason.

I think there's more to this story that we haven't seen yet. Gay or straight, this guy is a scumbag.

why do only slime balls run for political offices?

Like you guys are saying.. this guy probably has more of a history than just what's been said.. he'll just use the whole "gay" angle to cover it up.. or at least.. he'll try to do that. Hopefully people see through it all.

Well, having been accused of manipulating his "lover" into a nonconsensual sexual relationship is really the big deal here. There are plenty of gay politicians, even in New Jersey.

On one hand there's this really personal, sort of tragic side to this thing. The guy has a wife and daughter, who you can't help but feel for. And of course, to be outed on CNN as the ultimate result of a burgeoning political scandal sort of sucks.

Being gay is one thing, but the cheating and abuse of power... this guys should be charged criminally, he has an obligation to uphold the office
