Full-Time? How many hours a week do you work?
 

I've gotten into a debate with an acquaintence of mine about the average work week. He is attempting to tell me 1) that most people only have to work 40 hours a week and 2) that employers are generally breaking the law if their employees are being made to work over 40 hours.

I know this is bullocks, but I'm curious. How many hours a week do you work on average? (Applies to those working full-time jobs)

If the employees are paid on an hourly basis and work more than 40 hours a week, their employer is required to pay them overtime, which is time-and-a-half. If they dont, then they are breaking the law.

Im pretty sure this doesnt apply if you are salaried.

I know tons of people that work more than 40 hours a week. I work in a department of programmers--development isnt a 9-5 job most of the time.

Should have made it clear, I only meant that one can be essentially made to work over 40 hours if they are on salary. Our debate was over salaried workers since the rules for hourly workers are fairly clear cut.

I get paid by the hour and I clock in and out. So my employer isn't looking to pay me overtime...

And I've found out that if I stay 15 minutes late I don't get paid for that. It has to be 16 to count in the system as overtime :rolleyes:

And my hours are from 8:15-5:00PM. I'm pretty much always clocked in at 8:00AM. But I've noticed that if I leave at 4:58, my paycheck is a few dollars lower. It's just more corporate bullshit...

Many of my coworkers work 40+ hours a week, but they're salaried so it's expected.

I'm salaried, and I checked 45. I would say that 45 is a low week for me, but probably average. I do spend a lot of time working, at work and from home, so maybe I should have put more. Not getting paid for the extra really sucks, but the work still has to get done.

Salaried, and I do 65+. The regular work hours are required and the rest are necessary because my subcontractors work at night. That's when I'm able to work more closely with them and do the coordination necessary to keep projects on track.

I don't have any thoughts about it. I like what I do. I do what's necessary and I don't give the time it requires any further consideration.

35-40 On average, once classes start back up its back down to 25.

I'm full time permanent on a salary, but I do get overtime if I work more than 40 hours a week. I only have to work 37.5 hours a week though. So a typical work week for me is 37.5 hours. My overtime breaks down like this though.
37.5 - 40 hours = straight time
40+ = time and a half
If I work a sunday and work at least 8 hours on sat plus a full mon - fri then sunday hours are double time.

8 to 5 monday to friday..Always on call tho..kinda have to when its your own biz..

I average about 50 hours per week.

I'm salary and werk 47.5 hours a week, which is 9.5 hrs/day

When I was a department manager in a supermarket chain, I had 40 hours plus 3 hours overtime built in (that means 43 hours per week). When I moved up to store manager, it was 5 days at 10 hours per day, but each day consisted of an hour lunch (so it equaled 45 hours per week). However, we were salaried...that meant that, quite often, I did 12 to 15 hour days. I probably worked about 55 to 60 hours a week.

Now that I'm corporate, life is a little different. I work 9-5, but I'm constantly being called at home. Probably do about 5 hous per day of work at home, for a total of about 75 hours per week.

I checked the 40 option....although I dont really WORK that much lol but Im at my place of employment for 8 hours of "working" time M-F. Its amazing how much I get paid to "work" on a message board all day lol

Im a salaried employee exempt from over time pay under the labor laws...so even if I did work over 40 I wouldnt get more pay.

Salaried, but expected to work between 35 and 40. With said salary comes about an extra week of pay for the year, which is expected to be partially made up by odd weekends and long hours when deadlines loom.

I have never really kept close track of the hours I work. How do you count time on-call anyway. If I get woken up to answer a call and can't go back to sleep for an hour do I count the 5 minutes on the phone or the hour? Fortunately I don't have to worry about occaisionally wasting time during the weekend or even the week when working, since I don't get paid by time.

6:30 - 6:30, 5 days a week - but I only charge for 8 hour workdays. I love my job and don't mind putting in the extra hours, especially since we take long lunch breaks, shoot the breeze a lot, and sometimes play games.

Sometimes, I end up staying later (it's not uncommon for me to stay until 8PM or so) or show up on weekends to put in more hours. Depends on how busy we are, how fucked up the network is, etc.

By Federal Law, i work 60 hrs in 7 days or 70 hrs in 8 days. I am also exempted from any overtime pay. My pay is based on mileage not on actual hours worked.

After 14 years with the company, I'm pretty much 40 hours per week. But first 10 years here worked some mighty long hours, all for the same monthly salary. Guess it's my turn to kinda sit back now.

I get paid hourly, and I always work overtime. I work at least 50 hours a week. Many times I work 60+.

5 * 8 = 40

Before I started uni I worked 3 jobs that totalled to an average of 65 hours a week. Now I study and work part time approx the same.

About 60. But then again, they're strange hours.

I usually get up about 3am and work until 8 or 9. Spend an hour or so pottering around. Have a shower, go into the office and work until about lunchtime and then come home.

I usually work a few hours in the evening etc.

The joys of working with a global team spread from Sydney to San Jose to Brussels and London...

I'm checking in at 32-40 hours a week. Things have been nicer since i've cut down to one job.... With the two going, i wasn't getting paid ovetime but working up to 60 hours a week. That's rough when you're young and just starting out :S

I used to have the cushy job where I only had to "work" for 20 hours a week. I recently moved and joined the rest of the real world. Sucks because it is really cutting into my TFP time.

It really depends on how much I want to work. I always get at least 40 hours a week, that's a given, but I can pick up extra 8 hour shifts pretty much as often as I can handle. Which, unfortunately, is not that often at all. But I do always try to be available if many people call in and they're awfully short...

50 hours on a normal week.
38 of which are on salary
the others get compensated with a "productivity bonus"

which sort of screws me over really :) but I stay to get the job done anyway

Salary - 40 hrs.

Most of the time it's not even that much. I'm a programmer, and I have 2 week set deadlines which I normally meet in a little over a week, so the rest of the time I can either do whatever or proceed onto more work. I usually opt for "whatever".

I'd say 55+, salaried. I choose to work that much. People who work their tails off go farther than those who punch out at 40 and head for the liquor store.

I do atleast 60 a week.

I dunno, I personally find that I get raises and bonuses more for the solid applications I write vs. hours worked, but that's programming.

I'm sure that's true for most everything else though.

40. Im paid on an hourly basis (intern for the summer), and they dont like me to work more than 40 unless I have to. Which has never happened. Especially seeing as I dont really do anything.

Salaried. 40-50. Sometimes less. Sometimes more.

I'm Part-time and I work 35 to 41 hours a week and my week is 3 days long....14 hour days aren't that bad until you got to get up Tuesday for my Friday!

Ouch, if your not making 50 bucks an hour then your screwed....why such low hours?

If I started making hours like that I would be looking for a second job or a whole new all together!

full time for me is anything from 35 to 50 hours a week, it ranges depening on how much work is on and where in the country i'm working on the day

Humm I though full-time was you work your hours then go home!

Well are company does it like that and as long as I'm part-time I love it. They go home I stay and finish.
