Opinions of dreadlocks?
What do yall feel about dreads? Gross, ugly, depends?

Actually, I like dreadlocks. |
Dreadlocks look greasy and disgusting.

Sounds like a lot of fuckin work. I keep my hair very short so I don't have to mess with it all the time. At the moment I have a high and tight, the kind of haircut lots of military guys have. Shaved almost all the way on the sides and back, and a bit longer on the top (about 3/4ths of an inch). I look good with this style and only have to cut it once every three or four weeks, which I do by myself. I have never had my hair cut by a professional, and have been cutting my own hair for years. If I make a mistake, then it all comes off. Easy.
But if dreads are your thing, then that's cool. As long as I'm not wasting my time waxing your hair and twisting it, more power to you. |
I'd never do the dread thing, cause it would look awful on me, but i like them.
|
Dirty.

IMO it really depends on the person. Some people, it looks pretty good on, others, not so much.
If you like it, more power to you. |

If you want Jah to come and lift you up to the Kingdom of Heaven, your dreads better be long and strong. None of us baldheads like I and I is going to heaven no way.
To the best of my knowledge, which only comes from an undying love of Bob Marley, dreads are the natural condition of long and unkempt hair. If you don't comb it, EVER, and keep letting it grow, it will dread on its own. Then you can make like a real Rasta and go down to the river and wash it on the rocks. These are not real dreadshttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...dreadsnot2.jpg These are real dreadshttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...dreadsreal.jpg |
EDIT: The first pic looks like his hair isn't even dreaded yet. It just looks like strips of hair with wax in it. Not knotty at all.
|
Apparently I was searching while you were typing. I found and updated the post with a better picture of what I consider to be "not dreads."
Either way, I actually do like the style. Even though the former is not "authentic," it will probably get a helluva lot more ladies to talk to you than the latter. |
Oops, yeah I replied after the first edit, not the second.
Yeah, I'm not Rasta so I don't really care if my dreads aren't "real." Most chicks I know actually dig the look, since I keep mine clean. And I'd rather call them dreads than matted strips of hair, which is what mine are :p |
I like dreads. I understand the culture that surrounds them. My dad's side of the family is from the Carribean, West Indies.
I also think that a girl who has dreads is way sexy. You see very few of them. |
damn right, girls with dreads - good thing
i think they look cool, but i don't think i have the commitment to grow any myself |
I think they can look good on the Bob Marley type, but on 99.9% of other people I think they look awful. They may not be dirty, but they look like it to me.
Don't mean to slam you mate, but that's my opinion on dreadlocks :) |
99% of the time a set of dreads look utterly FILTHY on a person.
On girls it is about unnatractive as it can get, and on guys they are just considered generally dirty. Often the stereotype of a stoner is applied to them as well. |

I don't think they are attractive at all. Has nothing to do with cleanliness, but more just I don't find them looking all that nice, and I do like long hair since I have very long hair myself. |
I like hair that's touchable and that I can run my fingers thru... My hands would get stuck in dreads...
|
I think dreads can look really sexy on the right person (but really bad on the wrong person). And I don't think they look dirty if it's made the way you're talking about Carn. You can tell if they are the dirty kind by how messy/matted the person's hair is.
|
If you're white, just say no.
My little brother did the dread thing. When they were short, it was okay, but after a while, they just looked all greasy and nasty. Or as I used to say to him, "it looks like your hair had sex with Mrs. Butterworth." |

The braiding that they do in the carribean (like in the picture) to all the tourists is just dreadful IMO. parddon the pun. |
Any hairstyle that requires a lifestyle change isn't worth having. If dreads prevent you from normal hygienic procedures and from durfing, then maybe you should reconsider having them.
Besides, baldness is where it's at. Quick, easy, clean, and mostly free (except for the hella expensive Gillette Mach 3 blades). |
White guys can look good with natural dreads, it just depends on the person and how much effort they put into it.

I'm personally thinking about getting dreadlocks in the near future. I've grown my afro pretty big (Yes, I'm mixed, Black and white; Jamaican and Canadian) through 2 years of getting braids.
And I mean I'm along the lines of getting the non-"real" ones. My girlfriend has protested that I shouldn't get dreadlocks but after pointing out in public which ones that I'd get she turned the other cheek. I like the look of clean dreads, and I'm willing to put up with the upkeep of them, as i've gone through it with my afro and my braids. I'm willing to take it to the next level. Carn, if you have any interesting links that are good for research, by all means send them my way, I'm thinking about getting my dreads before fall starts. Thanks. |
dreads are good when the strands are even, ive seen lots where the people either did them by themselves or had a crappy hair dresser do them and they end up all over the place and in every direction. When done good and on the right people (im not talking only caribbean/african americans either) they are pretty sweet. Ill second dreds on a pretty lady are mighty fine
|
I used to think they were kind of neat until the last 5 people in a row I met with dreadlocks were complete assholes or losers. Now everytime I see someone with dreads, I am prejudiced against them and I have to consciously not be put off by them. I'm trying to overcome the problem... It's like my own little racist hell :o
|
|
I think they look like strands of dog shit growing out of your head. It makes me sick looking at them. Ugh!
-Lasereth |
I love dreads, especially if done well. I could never pull them off, but i have a couple of mates, white and black who have really nice, even clean dreads and they do like v nice. Rasta stylee dreads if they uneven dont look as good, but still got nothin against em.
Girls with dreads are mighty fine i agree ) |
Find girls with dreads very sexy. I think it looks cool on some guys, but not others. I think it's the way they act, not the way they look that makes it look bad on some people.
|
no offense meant at all here..
I hate them, I think they are nasty and disgusting looking |
One of my classmates had hers done in a salon. It looked really nice. I have no idea what err "natural dreadlocks" would look like though.
|
I love dreads!
If they're well formed and not the hippy kind (saw tons of those at college) they're great! Especially very mature ones that have locked up nicely and reach down around waist-length. I'd probably have dreads myself if I wasn't thinning so much up top and didn't love having my curls so much. I may do synth-dreads someday, though. |
I do not mind dreads at all - in fact, I think they are kinda cool - AS LONG as its not a termite nest, and does not smell bad.
There's definitely a way to keep dreads without forsaking personal hygiene, as your original post seems to suggest. Sounds like you are doing a good job at maintaining quality dreads, and I commend you :D If I didn't shave my head, I could possibly pull off a decent set of dreads. Possibly... |
just my .02, I think they're dirty, scappy and shitty looking in general
|
The vote seems to be pretty split here, but for the record, I love dreads. I have a friend that has the clean kind and I have a friend who let them happen naturally. I LOVE the first one, but the second is disgusting. I say, if you want them that badly and they look good on you, go for it.
good luck! |
White people should not have dreads.
