Now watch this drive .

Seriously though, there is no way in hell the rest of the US would let Texas secede. And even if it does, it will still have to trade with us. No country is an island (in a figurative sense, to all you Britons).

NASA is in Florida and California, not just Texas.

I thought that email was pretty fucking stupid. One person (the writer) is assuming that he shares the same view as everyone in Texas which is extremely naive and ignorant. And beauty is relative. If he thinks every woman in Texas is hot, that's simply his single, unimportant opinion.

I've seen this before, way before the current President was in power.

Old news. Nothing to see here. Move along.

Mr Mephisto

PS - Statement #2 is incorrect. The right of States to secede was effectively abolished by the Civil War. Sheesh...

PPS - It's meant to be satirical by the way...

Um, Kerry rocks, and Texas oil giants will just have to live with that, he may not be perfect, but ANYTHING is better than Bush. For that matter, as previously stated, Texans are full of it, they couldn't exist with out the other 49 states, unless they wanna be more like Mexico :P

Sorry but in the treaty of annexation Texas has the right to leave the US whenever they choose.

The Texas economy would survive, but would take a while to get over the temporary recession of people leaving to stay in the US.

Will it happen? Not anytime soon. But if the public sentiment in Texas does get that high the US has no legal right to prevent it.

Acknowledging the idea of Manifest Destiny that had seized the American public, Secretaries of State Upshur and Calhoun negotiated a treaty of annexation with the Republic of Texas, but the treaty was rejected by the Senate due in large measure to the opposition of northern senators. Recognizing that the two-thirds Senate vote required to ratify a treaty was unattainable, President John Tyler presented a simple declaration of the annexation of Texas to Congress, which passed it by joint resolution.
Or this.
http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/ref/abouttx/annexation/

Quote:
When all attempts to arrive at a formal annexation treaty failed, the United States Congress passed--after much debate and only a simple majority--a Joint Resolution for Annexing Texas to the United States. Under these terms, Texas would keep both its public lands and its public debt, it would have the power to divide into four additional states "of convenient size" in the future if it so desired, and it would deliver all military, postal, and customs facilities and authority to the United States government. (Neither this joint resolution or the ordinance passed by the Republic of Texas' Annexation Convention gave Texas the right to secede.)
So, what is it? Do you guys have a legal opt-out or not?

No. We do not. Annexation is a myth. Last time Texas seceded, we got welcomed back to the fold four and a half years later, with fights still occurring several weeks after the surrender at Appomatox. Once you're in the United States, there's no getting out. Last place that came even close to "secession" would be the Phillipines, as they left willingly from commonwealth status.

As for that email, there are a lot of true parts, and a lot of problematic parts.

However, those of you who support Kerry I have to disagree with. He's no better than Bush. Hell, he's no "oil tycoon," but his wife only has 700 MILLION DOLLARS. Sounds like a humble "man of the people" to me--just like George W Bush does.

The real problem I have with Kerry is his abuse of his veteran's status and his "decorated war hero" image--especially concerning his purple hearts. My cousin went through Vietnam as a scout sniper with the Marine Corps. He earned his purple heart by taking a rifle round through his left shoulder/pectoral region. I personally know several other recipients of the Purple Heart. They all say the same thing--they weren't heros. They did what they had to do, nothing more, nothing less. One of em, Pat, earned two purple hearts, a bronze star and a silver star in the four years he was in the Marines--all during the 7 months he spent in Vietnam. Funny how even Pat, a highly-decorated Marine who got a battlefield comission to Lieutenant in the conflict, is humble about his decorations. All of em are. Kerry isn't

I think the reason kerry pushed his war experience was because the bush admin was calling him unpatriotic and started questioning his service. Since the Bush admin is running such a heavy negative campaign Kerry has to push every positive thing he has.

Personally i commend Kerry for staying positive where Bush has not. Bush has no morals.

Why is it that everyone thinks the other side is being negative, but their side is all positive. The only reason that Kerry was nominated is that he went negative against Bush in the primaries. The Democratic primaries were a contest who could be the most Anit Bush and still appear mainstream enoug ( to the Democrat base) to be elected in November. There was 6 months of speeches attacking Bush and Bush ran ads in response to those attacks.

It should also be pointed out that Bush has NEVER publicly questioned Kerry's patriotism. This is a common defense of the left. If you point out a weakness on the part of a Democrat based on their record you are accused of questioning their patriotism. No, I am questioning their judgement, leadership, and political philosophy. That is legitimate discourse in a political debate.

When I first started reading the thread, that is what I meant to point out in my response. Then as I read further I completely forgot what started the thread.

I went to college in Texas an unfortunately long time ago. While I was there I did come to the conclusion that Texans, as a rule, were Texans first and Americans second. I don't mean that as a dig or complaint. It is just something that I gradually became aware of. Maybe that is because Texas is the only state that got to the point of actually having a functioning national government before joining the Union.

That may actually be a good thing and more in line with what many of our Founding Fathers were looking for.

I loved my time in Dallas and I would not hesitate to move back.
