We took a picnic to the beach.

Went to a bed & breakfast inn in Vermont.

Since then, we have celebrated either by taking a long weekend, or by purchasing something for the house that we pick out together. There are already too many "gift giving" holidays, we needed to find a way to make the anniversary different.

First anniversary is traditionally paper. the modern I believe is clocks

Tickets somewhere, a photograph of the two of you (or a cheesecake shot of you),

Dont want to spend money?
Write each other a love letter, get some crayons and construction paper, and make each other a coupon book of things you'll do for each other - use your imagination as to what the coupons are for... from taking on tthe trash, sacraficing the remote control, one sexual fantasy... Whatever

A really nice watch

Malificent, what exactly do you mean by "paper"? I just got married a little over two weeks ago, so I still have quite a ways to go before number one, but what were some of the tradition paper ideas and how far back does it go? It sounds like you have knowledge of this and would like to pick your brain.

Also, you say clocks is modern, so that means a clock would basically be the first year anniv. gift?

Somewhere back in time, and it's been forever, because I remember my grandparents Golden anniversary (50th) - and they've been dead more than 25 years -- someone, probably hallmark, came up with a list of what the traditional and modern gifts are for each year that a couple has been married

This is the same list that's in the back of my datebook.

we just had a nice quiet evening together... don't do anything too flashy as then you'll have nothing for future anniversaries...

We returned to the same room where we'd spent our honeymoon (Hippensteal Inn Bed & Breakfast in Gatlinburg). I called several months in advance so I'd get the exact same room.

But don't copy us when it comes to your 10th Anniversary. We spent that one in ICU at the local hospital.

What does your wife like to do? I think events rather than gifts are often more memorable. And how much money are you looking to spend? Not knowing the answer to either question, here are some random ideas that I just think would be fun:

1. hot air balloon ride
2. if you're more adventurous, skydiving together
3. put together some of her favorite foods in a picnic basket, blindfold her and drive her to a beautiful park where you have everything all set up, and pay a musician to serenade you
4. make a compilation CD of her favorite romantic music
5. put together a video/DVD of clips of your wedding photos with your song playing behind it and a sweet, personalized message read/spoken by you on camera
6. hire someone to paint her portrait, or yours both together (nicer than a photo)
7. surprise her with flowers delivered every hour at work
8. write her a poem and pay to have it published as an ad in your local newspaper; surprise her with breakfast and the paper in bed
9. horse-drawn carriage ride followed by dinner and dancing
10. go to a spa together and get a couples massage (you'll both be getting a massage at the same time in the same room). Some spas have day packages for couples that usually include a romantic lunch.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reference. I will have to do a little digging around to find out exactly where this all stemmed from but hey, I sit here at work and TFP all day!

I personally love the traditional fifth anniv. gift. Wood. Here honey, I got you a 2x4! Or if you wanted to take it another way...
