The only way this problem is difficult is you have to make sure the person who wrote it and the person working on it have the same notation for math problems. As above, there is a confusion about exponents. Otherwisae, yeah if you know what the symbols mean and can't get it... well I'm like fries please.

We Australians are taught it as BODMAS
Brackets Orders Division Multiplication Addition Subtraction And I would expect either 3^4 or 3 <sup>4</sup> for power of... I just read the bracket as a useless way of multiplying which could've been (2+2) rather than 4... |

I remember seeing this sort of thing on packs of baseball cards when I was a kid, and thinking to myself that was kinda weird that Canadian kids had to do math in order to have a good time with baseball cards.
Now I know.
