Any Dentists Out There?

Apparently, today is a really bad day for small, delicate people like me to run around with big guys who are feeling especially reckless.

I decided to take my lunch break to play ultimate frisbee today - I thought it would be good for me to run around and clear my head so that I didn't go into the second half of my day worrying about all the work I didn't get done while my laptop was giving me the blue screen of death.

About 2 minutes into the game, a very big tall guy bulldozed me and I went from running purposefully to sitting on the grass, dizzy and disoriented, without my glasses on. I didn't even see him coming or feel the impact, but a few seconds later, my throbbing jaw told me where his elbow caught me. That's when I discovered that PART OF MY TOOTH WAS MISSING. Gah!

Half of my upper last molar got sliced off (probably by my lower molar) and I didn't even know where it was. I didn't spit it out with the small mouthful of blood, and I didn't feel anything in my mouth that was even remotely tooth-shard-like. "You must have swallowed it," everyone told me. Gee, thanks. I can't imagine having had time to swallow something like that when it all happened so quickly.

What's worse is that I don't know what I lost out there in the grass - a piece of tooth, a filling, or both. I suspect it may be at least a piece of tooth because there's a freshly exposed part of my gums.

Does anybody know if a simple filling can fix this or will I have to get something more complicated like a cap?

Well, first thing, go to a drugstore and get a temporary filling. You probably have some raw nerves there, it'll help with the pain.

I think you can get a temporary filling for now, but later you can get a fake tooth.

My boyfriend had his front teeth broken off in a fight when he was a little boy, and a little while ago, he got replacement teeth.

About an hour after I posted this, I found the chunk of tooth I lost still stuck to the front of my t-shirt. *shakes head*

My front tooth has a nice nasty chip on it. The first dentist put a filling on it, that got knocked out, next dentist put a filling, lasted a while, then naturally fell off one day (many years afterwards), because I was poor at the time I went with getting another filling. What my dentist suggested is when I can afford teeth whitening AND the cap to have those done at the same time, because the cap won't get any lighter.

A filling should work, it will more than likely fall out after some years. A cap will be permanent, at least till the next time you get elbowed hard enough to knock it out.

if you lose a tooth the best thing to preserve it in before getting to the dentist is milk, failing that put it under your tongue.
sounds like its probably a gonner now though.

First if you get a tooth knocked out , try not to touch any roots on it and shove it back in place. milk thing is old. sometimes it wil re-root in its place. Placing under tongue will only knock off any roots still attached and leave no chance of replacing. Now to be tech. when you say half do you mean half from the top down , or half from on side halfway in? either way a filing will not help. youll probably need a onlay/inlay crown ( dont call them caps ) dont bother with store bought kits. Would you buy a store bought kit if you broke your arm? NO! If you have any questions just ask Im a certified dental technitian so I can help you not get ripped off if you decide to go to a dentist.

jackassidy - thanks for all the info, but it was taken care of today! I guess it wasn't exactly half - it was more like the back wall (so 1/4). The dentist fixed it with some bonding. I do have one question though - is it going to continue to be extra-sensitive to cold liquids? My nerve is no longer exposed, but the tooth still hurts a bit when I have ice water. Then again, I just got it fixed today and the nerve has been irritated for two days now.

your sensitivity may very well be do to the fact of how recent your accident happened. unfortunately some people are very sensitive to hot/cold with a bonding like your dentist did. give it a few days to rest, youve had some serious new shit going on there. if you still have probs. after 7 days you should go back to your dentist and he will discuss your options to you. p.s. it doesnt cost anything to call your dentist and get him on the phone and ask him about you situation. good luck. not a product placement but even a shitty store bought mouth gaurd for any sport could save you hundreds of dollars.
