Another.....what would you do?
O.K., here is a question.
Let's say you have a website and bandwidth isn't a concern (well, at least not a huge one). What kind of website would you build? What is missing that hasn't been done already? What would be unique?

Are you in this situation KMA, because I have an idea, I just want to keep it a secret for now. I'd be interested in starting it up with someone if you want. PM me if you want to talk.

Halx (the "x" is silent),
Point taken. Plus I appreciate what you have done. I have looked at other "forums" and was not anywhere as impressed as I am with with this one. I would have never even thought about signing up for a forum until I saw this one. Take this the way it is meant, but for someone your age to accomplish this is extremely commendable. When the older "farts" start to complain about today's youth, you should be removed from the equation. Brown nose aside. I am getting at originality. I remember the days when color T.V. was cool and computers weren't even discussed. I actually sit here wondering if there is anything new to be discovered regarding the "information superhighway." We used to complain about this regarding music, now I wonder if the same feeling applies to the internet. i.e. What is new and what could be new? The best way to learn new ideas is to ask for them.

I'd have a SuprNova.org mirror, or mirror their forums.

I think you read too much into that.
![]() I'm a web programmer, and a very ambitious person, so when I get an original idea, I usually jump on it. Some work, some don't. What I'd like to do is develop a community with more features of communications, but with the same ideals, exclusivity and moderation of the TFP. If we could integrate audio chat into the site.... if we could integrate webcam chat into the site... I see this stuff all over the place, but it's never done with any genuine humane motive. It's all about making money. I would like the provide the same services for free. So add it up. TFP culture + massive interaction + a trustworthy watchful eye + free access based on behavior = Internet utopia.

So...
You are pretty close to nirvana, how would you push it over the edge? From an old capitalist, you are missing opportunities if that is your desire. As I browse the threads people are basically begging you for more. You could get what you want and make a living at it if so desired. So...at the risk of detracting...what would it take to get that? In my world there is no "humane motive" so just the thought of this is foreign just as there is no "free." I am not critiquing your desires in any way shape or form as I am just trying to understand them.

Such is the mentality of corporate america. Why put as much effort into it as possible, thus making it meaningful, when you can do a quick, effortless job and make millions?
There is a concept of trustworthiness and altruism that you cannot acheive by profiting from your passions. Even the very act of asking for donations has drawn attention from overly imaginative conspiracy theorists. I've mulled over turning a profit from the TFP for a while. In the end, I decided it was best to maintain the true giving spirit of the TFP by not buying into that. I once had a few banners going, but I've stopped taking offers from advertisers because I want to keep this place.. MY playground.. as pure as possible.

I think that by trying to turn a profit from this, we would all lose a very close sense of community. The way this site is, we can all share the benifits as equals, not as customers.

Since I work at a web hosting company I get web hosting pretty much for free. But, it's tough to come up with original ideas, not to mention how much time it really involves. I find that is my main bottleneck for what I can do.
I would pick something that interests you and see what you can do to help the existing community out there. For example, I love history - would love to start some kind of archive service. I did start a History forum that isn't popular at all but has a few visitors (http://thehistoryforum.net). One of the more gratifying things I've done is set up a website for a friend's sister that just got a transplant 2 weeks ago. It's been set up for a few months now while they were waiting for the organ; and I set it up as a "Journal" (blog) and they use it once or twice a day to keep everyone updated. They tell me that it saves them several hours a day because they are not calling people all the time like they used to (The girl the journal is for, she's been having all kinds of problems since she was little, and is now 22). I've thought of hosting free journals for transplant patients. Again that is something I'd love to do but it is just the time restraint. Let us know how your idea goes! You could definately find help with anything you do from these forums. Props to Halx ![]() |

That is part of my problem.
Every time I think of an idea its been done several times. There just doesn't seem to be anything unique. I remember thinking that about alternative music--its all been done

remember: even if bandwidth isn't a concern for you it could be for the people who visit your site.
as far as a theme or idea to base your site around, the limit is your own imagination buddy!
