Kids nowadays......Damn

Wish these were mine.

Two child prodigies from India made the news in June. A boy named Bharanidharan, 13, backed by several adult disciples, declared himself a Hindu holy man and founded a monastery in Salem in Tamil Nadu state, until his parents had him abducted and brought back home. (A judge released the boy back to his ashram and will later conduct a hearing on his rights.) And Akrit Jaswal, 11, acclaimed as a genius by Indian and international organizations, recently spent two months at the Tata Cancer Institute in Mumbai, working with researchers on cancer and AIDS, and at the recommendation of doctors, Akrit's parents sold most of their belongings to finance a research lab for him in New Delhi. Crazy

Asta!!

The first story is just meh, but the seconds story, damn...

Bill O'Rights 07-24-2004 09:16 PM

If Akrit Jaswal is as much of a genius as to consult on cancer and AIDS, then why did his parents have to sell most of their belongings to finance a lab for him? Not that I'm questioning the story, I'm just curious as to why there is no... Idunno...fellowship(?) set up to help him with his research.

I was expecting some punk ass kids screwing up when I read the title, but this is much better.

crow_daw 07-25-2004 10:02 AM

Yeah I don't really understand the importance of the first story. But that second kid, now that's special. Eleven freaking years old.

World's King 07-25-2004 11:37 AM

Dexter?

water_boy1999 07-27-2004 09:37 AM

Well, if my child decided to start a monestary I would be impressed. The second story was cool too.

bigoldalphamale 07-27-2004 09:56 AM

i remember when i was 11...something about transformers and GI Joe saving the world from decepticons. seemed pretty important to me at the time.

anyway, just more proof that Asia will soon rule the world.

mingusfingers 07-27-2004 10:20 AM

That's crazy. Bigger population, better chance for genuises. And poop-canners, too.

raeanna74 07-27-2004 01:18 PM

Now that's good parenting, in the second one. If your kid wants to do something big for other people, support him. That kid has to have been encouraged to do big things when he was little.

So Cool.

billys 07-27-2004 01:26 PM

Does that make me an underachiever :)

I think so :)

deselina 07-29-2004 03:10 PM

I don't believe both stories. :/

When I saw the subject "Kids Nowadays," here's more what I had in mind:

Huge firecracker taped to rabbit -- owner charged

Henry K. Lee, Chronicle Staff Writer
Thursday, July 29, 2004

Lucky the rabbit is living up to her name, no thanks to her college- bound owner, who with his friends is accused of taping her to a powerful explosive and tossing her into a Castro Valley lake.

Luckily for Lucky, nothing blew up and her owner fished her out of the water because, he told The Chronicle, he didn't want her to drown.

But that didn't impress Alameda County prosecutors, who charged Nick Sigmon, an 18-year-old lifeguard at Lake Don Castro, and fellow lifeguard Paul Collins, 20, of Castro Valley with misdemeanor animal cruelty on Wednesday. Two other people present during the July 13 incident may also face charges.

"I think that a lot of people are judging us without knowing us at all," Sigmon said. "It's really bothering me."

Collins declined to comment Wednesday.

Sigmon said he adopted Lucky after he nearly ran over her with his Acura Integra as she hopped across a San Leandro street just after Easter. He's headed to UC Santa Barbara this fall -- to study biology -- and said he simply can't care for Lucky anymore.

Asked why the group decided to tape an illegal M-1000 -- a huge firecracker equivalent to a quarter of a stick of dynamite -- to the animal, Sigmon replied, "Um, that's a real tough question to answer."

Their downfall came when one of them snapped photos of their alleged deeds and posted them on his Web log, an online diary of sorts. Because nothing on the Internet remains a secret for long, someone who happened upon the photos posted them on Craigslist, the hugely popular bulletin board where people post jobs, sell stuff and look for dates.
Article goes on to say that the rabbit's owner is a real straight kid, saved four people from drowning as a lifeguard. I like the part where he complains about how people judge him without knowing him, but can't explain why he taped essentially. what, half a stick of dynamite to his pet rabbit. He's going to make one hell of a biologist.

I expected this thread to be more like the rabbit story, but it was a pleasant surprise. When I read the headline of the rabbit article, I couldn't stop laughing, it just sounded so funny. Although I do hate people that are cruel to animals, and that person is sick, I can't imagine doing that to a poor helpless animal.

Bentley Little 07-30-2004 08:40 AM

If this kid doesn't know what a stick of dynamite does, well hmmm, makes ya think! Uh what would this here stick-o-dynamite do if I right plum lit it while taped to this here bunny-rabbit? (bob-the-farmer accent).
