Urban Living: Memo to Tenants "Stay Home during RNC"
Quote:
It's already really difficult here in the city. They constantly are barricading streets for this demonstration, parade, motorcade, what have you. Security is very tight around most places where people tend to congregate. I already dread Matinee Wednesdays.... Times Square is completely full those days. One Convention I do remember a truck driving with topless strippers around the city. That was nice.

Wow, that's nuts.
I hate how many people can be affected by one darn convention... Dubya is going to be here on Wednesday and half of our city is being re-routed...

Actually,
I think the danger is more from protesters than the Republicans. Many groups have said that they will be protesting (some violently) during the RNC. So do you bow to these groups and stop the American political process or do you do the best you can and have the convention anyway?

No major food deliveries? That would cause half my campus to starve by the time the week was over

I remember the last convention in the city, I think it was for the DNC -- other than a bunch of people from points South, who don't quite know how to act in "the big city", and couldn't quite master teh subways, it really wasn't that bad.
The protesters will probably be a bigger problem than the convention itself.

Just be glad that NYC isn't like Boston...they're basically shutting down all commuter traffic here because of the DNC. North Station (similar to Penn Station) will be closed, I-93 south and North into and out of the city will be closed, US Route 1 South and North in and out of the city, etc., etc.

I remember the 68 DNC.
It's gonna suck in NYC. The rumors are running fast and furious. Yesterday's Daily News? Post? One of them, had a headline about fears of hardcore demonstrators working to ceate a state of anarchy. Things usually suck in NYC, but this kind of shit (whether true or not) from the newspaper (and from the asshats who might really do it) don't make things any better. I can picture this turning into another Kent State. It is going to be a rough week.

Man, I wouldn't leave my apartment.
Better yet, I'd leave the city. Seriously. Get thee out of thy city. And it's not an issue of running scared or anything, it's just smart. Besides, didn't the terrorists already win? I think I read that somewhere

Since I live in Queens I figured going to protest the RNC but after seeing how the anti-war protests went down - I can imagine how quickly it could all get really ugly.
The threat of terrorism is a factor but the high security alert is another big reason not to go. After seeing exactly how "patriotic" people can be at protests, the risks really aren't worth it when I can hit 'em where it really hurts by voting against them.

Protests are ineffective. People often overestimate their own importance. Let the convention take place peacefully. and bring money to the city. Don't punish the residents by blocking roads and infrastructure, and let the police deal with real crimes. Voice your opposition in a civilized manner at the ballot box in November.

man, these must be some crazy protesters you guys know =P
although I see the provision in the letter extreme, I think that because of the number of people that will be concentrated in that single area it is necessary. I don't see anything in the letter that indicates that there's any real danger to anyone, other than there being ALOT of people in one place at one time. I don't know about on the east coast, but all the protests I've witnessed are generally peaceful.. even the WTO protests were peaceful until the Seattle PD started infringing on people's rights and physically mauling random people. All that aside... isn't it the republican war mongers we need to be worried about creating more violence? I don't think a bunch of peace loving hippies would want to take that away from them ... j/k .. sort of.. |
