High Tea--american style

This is probably still an "everyday" kind of thing in the UK, I could be wrong though.

I've been talking to a few people about this and thought...why not make a thread on it.

I have a friend that runs a tea house about an 1 1/2 hours out side atlanta, and I am taking my 11 year old daughter for her first "high tea" tomorrow.

The place is really really neat, its in a house that was built in the early 1800's and when you get there the first thing you have to do is pick out "dress" up clothes from her collections....old timey hats, dresses, gloves, furs-coats or wraps. Then you settle down for whatever kind of service you reserved for.

Growing up, tea parties with my mother are some of my favorite memories. Now that we are adults we still get together and do this and its just as much fun in my 30's as it was when I was little.

High tea is always my favorite because for a small amount of money you get a lot.

Do any of you still do these kinds of things with your mothers and/or daughters? My daughter and I have them at home but she is REALLY looking forward to doing this tomorrow.

Here is the link for the particular tea house I go to

I'm drinking tea right now.

Just some normal black tea... nothing fancy.

That sounds so wonderful.

I don't know of any teahouses close to where I live, but my boyfriend and I occasionally have teatime, when we just settle down and drink tea together. (Actually, I sorta gulp mine.)

I don't usually stand on ceremony myself, but I appreciate that someone is preserving these ritual aspects of our cultural heritage. :)

The Plaza Hotel, in NYC, last time I checked, still did a high tea, it was a little to Ritzy for me (I'm just a simple girl at heart)

I took my niece to The American Girl Store's Cafe for tea, I think she was 9 at the time, she was all impressed with having juice and fancy cakes before dinner.

My younger niece comes over occassionally for tea parties with Auntie Em, but can't wait til she's old enough to get dressed up to go out for cake with me. She thinks the getting d ressed up and going out is cool .... (wait'll she has to work for a living-- she'll change her mind)

Your tea house sounds charming - and a lot of fun - -nice experience for the young girls

There's a Russian Tea Room by my parent's house, but I've never been inside - is that the same thing?

Heh, right now I'm drinking Chinese anti-constipation tea (or rather waiting for it to cool down). Yes, it really works.

My wife made us and a couple of friends a high tea _once_, when we were courting. It was pretty damned special, and I haven't seen another since. I'd say it's pretty uncommon for people to do this for themselves out here in Sunny California (cue the fog). Full afternoon tea and high tea can be had in the SF Bay Area, or it was at least a few years ago. In my town, we did have a British cafe owner who would do a high tea on request for groups, but she's off shearing sheep somewhere now.... truthfully.

the one on west 57th?
This is a really interesting restaurant, they closed for close to 2 years to rennovate, but it looks awesome - the menu is -- well -- russian food - (blintz, borscht, and other stuff)

I don't believe they do a high tea, but it would be kinda cool if they did.

Oh yeah, It's all about the scones baby...with cream and home made strawberry jam! Earl Grey tea, please.

I used to know a few nice places but haven't been in years.

I found a really interesting looking Chinese tea place last week - a tiny serene little courtyard with lots of greenery hidden away in an urban landscape.

SCONES!!! Yuuuuuuuummmmmmmy!!!!

Where's my jam?? :hmm:
