MetroNaps: The Art of the Power Nap

A company in NYC has opened for business, quick power naps in the middle of the day. I can say from experience that a good nap in the middle of the day helps tremendously, especially if the day is to be a long long day. During some of the long productions it wasn't uncommon for people to just catch a little shut eye in some of the quiet spaces.

New Yorkers pay to nap in city that never sleeps

By Georgina Cooper

NEW YORK, July 8 — New York is called the city that never sleeps, but one small company wants that to change.

High above the bustling streets, honking taxicabs and crowded sidewalks, on the 24th floor of the landmark Empire State Building, is MetroNaps, a month-old company offering New York's version of the Spanish siesta: a 20-minute nap.

Stressed-out customers arrive in a quiet, darkened room filled with futuristic chairs, or ''napping pods,'' where they can pay $14 for their snooze.

''MetroNaps is a place where busy New Yorkers get power nap in New York City,'' says co-founder Arshad Chowdhury.

White noise machines block out whispered conversation at the front desk. Sleepers stretch out in the reclining seats, which resemble plush dentists' chairs, with blankets covering their legs and music piped into headphones.

After 20 minutes, the sleeping pod wakes up the customer with a combination of vibrations and light.

Chowdhury said nappers are encouraged to sleep just 20 minutes because a longer session tends to leave them more groggy than refreshed.

Abdul Latif, a Broadway singer and dancer who likes to rest between an audition and a performance, said it was better to pay for a nap than to sit at a coffee shop.

''It's the closest thing to your bed,'' he said. ''It's either this, or the top of a table with your head down.''

Another MetroNaps customer, writer and researcher Ben Stiller, said he needs that daily nap.

''This is what energizes me, this is what keeps me going,'' he said.

The Future is NOW

I've heard that any power nap over ten minutes can leave you disgruntled when woken up.

But hey, that is a pretty good idea. It may just become the next Starbucks! Hahaha.

Put those next to interstate highways, and you've got mega business! Probably much more comfortable than trying to cat nap in the car while pulled off the road.

What an interesting concept, pay to sleep.

Yeah... Paying for my biological functions seems a little iffy to me. What's next? Being charged by the blink? The heartbeat?

Though for a (very) short-stay hotel with fairly nice amenities, the price is definitely right.

lurkette 07-08-2004 02:31 PM

You're not paying to sleep, you're paying to sleep somewhere where your boss can't see you and your co-workers can't bug you and wake you up. Sure beats an overheated car in the parking lot :)

maleficent 07-08-2004 02:35 PM

10 minute naps wouldn't do anything for me, I'd rather have a four shot espresso. That'd do the job.

If I am going to sleep, it's gotta be for 3-4 hours minumum... But its a groovy looking chair - -I'd like one of those.... though it might make me quite claustrophobic

Polyphobic 07-08-2004 02:47 PM

If I'm tired I can sleep anywhere. Under a desk, on the floor in a corner, etc

The problem is getting asleep. Once I'm awake I have difficulties sleeping. Except when I am holding my son. Too much warmth makes me sleepy. I say no to the power naps. Just give me extra breaks. :)

You just need a desk like George Castanza.

KMA-628 07-08-2004 03:25 PM

Stick another one in the 'no' category.

Not that its a bad idea, but I can't take short naps. If I go down, I stay down...then I'm up all night (hey I'm usually up all night anyway, so what's the difference)

Plus, wouldn't your hair and clothes get all messed up?

k1ng 07-08-2004 03:47 PM

I can attest that a power nap at lunch will do the trick. If I'm tired all morning at work, I will eat a quick lunch and take a 30 min nap. When I first wake up I feel pretty groggy, but five minutes later I feel refreshed and energetic. It's great!

Those prices are a little steep for a poor college student, but if I had the extra money and it was nearby, I would probably go for it.

MSD 07-08-2004 03:54 PM

Fuck.

Another idea I was going to try out in a few years when I had some money to invest taken before me.

Between this and the self-cooling beer can, I was hoping to retire by the time I'm 30. I guess I'll just have to do it the way that involves actual work.

Hey, there's a thought. They should rent out children.

Or cats! When one of our cats sits on you and sleeps, they begin emitting these extremely potent sleep waves that can render anyone inside the blast radius unconscious.

when i was a child i use to take naps in school under my desk... all i did in school was nap. but now i feel like i am wasting daytime hours when i take a nap in the middle of the day when i could be outside or working...(but im actually inside on my computer... reading tfp...) ok, im up too early im going back to sleep.

water_boy1999 07-09-2004 09:26 AM

I have been taking naps on my lunch break for years. I do a crossword for 15 minutes, nap for 20 minutes, eat for 25 minutes. I refresh the brain, then the body, and wrap it up with reenergizing with food. I read that a study done years ago proved that people who nap during lunch breaks were more productive after the lunch break.

Rubyee 07-09-2004 09:40 AM

I would not do that at all. I would pay my 14 dollars, lie down in the chair, spend four minutes finding a comfortable spot, spend three minutes worrying about how much time I have left and how I had better fall asleep "NOW!", and spend the remaining 13 minutes in a horrible quasi sleep where I am too hot in my clothes, too worried about wasting my money on this stupid nap, and too alert to fall asleep.

Instead, if I worked closer to home, I would go home, take my pants off, jump on the couch with my tiger blanket, turn on a show I really, really like, and be out in seconds.

Karby 07-09-2004 03:20 PM

i had one of those today. except i didn't pay $14 for it.
5 minutes of quick nap is usually enough for me.

When I lived out on Long Island it would take me 2 hours to go round trip and i could sleep on the train in both directions... :) and a monthly pass too... so no extra cost

I have been taking short naps in the late afternoon for many years. I just find a comfortable spot at home and doze off for a half hour or so. After that I feel refreshed and ready to keep going for hours. I think the chair is a great idea if it lets people get a little more sleep and be a little less grumpy from lack of rest.

phoenix1002 07-11-2004 02:49 PM

Hmm... I sleep about 5-6 hour each night, get through work in a half-asleep daze, return home, stay up till about 2 or 3, wake up around 8ish, and repeat. Until I crash. Naps are for wusses :p.

onodrim 07-11-2004 03:09 PM

It's an interesting concept and it's probably great for some people who need that break during the day and can't get away. However, I've always found that sleeping for only a half hour during the day only makes me more tired, rather than energized. *shrug*

Well, I've heard that the ideal time for a nap is 20 minutes and under or at least 1.5 hrs. The former is because you get to rest your body without dropping into deep sleep, and the latter is so that you can get through at least one full sleep cycle and thus feel rested. Of course, I can't remember where I learned this so I may just be talking out of my ass.

DelayedReaction 07-11-2004 07:43 PM

14 bucks? Does Anna Kournikova wake you up or something?

Sleep at work. It's closer, and they pay YOU!

irseg 07-11-2004 11:36 PM

I've tried the 20 minute nap thing. It either consists of me laying there the entire time thinking that I only have 20 minutes to nap and worrying that I'll oversleep, or else I completely pass out and wake up 6+ hours later. I don't understand how people are able to sleep for such short lengths of time.

TM875 07-12-2004 11:17 AM

Oftentimes, I work nights. I doubt that one of these places would be open at 3am.

Naps really don't do it for me. It's either a quasi-sleep/nodding off period in my car at my lunch break, or a full-sleep fest for about 6 hours at home. Often, my naps are longer than my actual sleep cycles.

THGL 07-12-2004 11:37 AM

I snore, and I mean SNORE... and no '70's-era motorcycle helmet-looking pleather-covered chair is gonna hold back my noise! They'd kick my arse out the door in 5 minutes.

Oh, don't try to be so cynical, both of you. Are you outraged at grocery stores for making you pay to eat?

ForwardtoDeath 07-15-2004 06:48 AM

haha...i saw this on tv the other day, the news i think. I just dont see me paying to take a nap anytime soon. I think I can deal with waiting to get home to go to sleep.

Rubyee 07-15-2004 07:08 AM

I think someone here needs to pay for the experience and write an article for us on what they thought. A really in depth article. Who volunteers?
