It's odd, because there's always some exception to the rule.
I remember a long time ago, way, way back, 6 years ago about I was in a gaming clan for Starcraft. People to play games with, blah blah, it was fun. Anyway, we were allied with this one clan which was very unique. There were about 75 people max that read the board, but most of the people knew each other very well. There were racial slurs and such left and right, insults everywhere, but the thing was that wasn't what the board was about. It was just having fun with friends, outside of all the vulgarity, there was a lot of quality, I mean this was the best board I've ever been on (no offense Hal). Almost every post was carefully constructed, made a very clear point, and was often many paragraphs. If anyone stepped out of line, the moderators didn't even need to step in, the members would just pile on, ignore the person, and tell them to fuck off, if the person didn't care, the members would just continue, if the person just wouldn't stop, the board would ignore them. Self-moderation. Eventually though, the clan just died off.

One day an Englishman, a Scotsman, and an Irishman walked into a pub together. They each bought a pint of Guinness. Just as they were about to enjoy their creamy beverage, three flies landed in each of their pints. The Englishman pushed his beer away in disgust. The Scotsman fished the fly out of his beer and continued drinking it, as if nothing had happened. The Irishman, too, picked the fly out of his drink but then held it out over the beer and yelled "SPIT IT OUT, SPIT IT OUT, YOU BASTARD!" |

i belonged to a board that was rampant without mods.
and it was the most fun i've had at an internet community. it was SOO good. if there was a 5 page flood, or something really wrong posted, (like a few too many goatse or lemonparty pics) we'd just email the site admin and get them to clean up there was a lot of great fun there. organized wars on other boards (the official weezer, creed, metallica, linkin park boards, mxtabs, harmony central etc) and got some of the sites shut down for a while (lol we got in a lot of shit for that) some way cool inside-joke type things no one else would understand... thwap, rapics, dishonor, monosex just to name a few... plus there were a few very good, very genuine and intelligent people there. we had some great discussions there, over everything. there are alot of great and mixed views. pic posting meant you could post some hilarious replies, or illustrated posts. GREAT fun. but it's become heavily modded and a joke of itself, it is still my home and i feel loyal to it. but, im getting that feeling that some of you have all got before.... |

Obviously I'm mostly in agreement with the amount of moderation found on TFP since I help enforce it.
No shouting "UR A FAG", but we won't shut you down either for an unpopular opinion, so long as you aren't a dick about it.

A large board requires moderation. I think you can over moderate, for sure. However, the thing about moderation is... it reminds us "hey, you are talking to real people, and yes.. there are consequences to your actions here"
