NOTW???

What are those not of this world stickers on everyone's cars? I am seeing more and more of them lately. What does it mean?

phredgreen 06-24-2004 08:52 PM

did you google it yet?

try that out and see if self-reliance wins out over dependence on others for common information.

once you've figure it out, why don't you post an update for everyone, detailing what NOTW is and why you're seeing it everywhere.

Yeah, I googled it earlier but didn't have time to read the 50,000+ pages, I know it was a jesus quote or something, but I don't understand why people want it all over there vehicles.

phredgreen 06-24-2004 09:14 PM

a google search of the following term: NOTW "Not of this world"; nets the following:

second result:

John 8:23 - And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.

fifth result:

Quote:

Have you seen that insignia? I saw it on cars parked at church and around and couldn't figure it out until I got up close to a sticker at a store - NOTW means Not of this World. It reminds me that every time we as parents say "Our family doesn't do/say/watch/listen to that" because of our commitment to God we are in but not of this world. I'll join you in not opening the can of worms between the perception of truth based on faith. I remain, NOTW! :)

how hard was that?

oblar 06-24-2004 10:29 PM

for acronyms i would suggest www.acronymfinder.com ; however, in this particular case it doesn't give you what you are looking for.

acronymfinder is great for technology acronyms though.

C'mon, man.
When self reliance doesn't work,
come to the TFP.

Many people have done it. I bet you've done it too, phredgreen.

Who's it gonna hurt? It's nice to have a place to go to when you are in need.

tropple 06-25-2004 02:37 AM

No one remembers News of the Weird?

You calling phredgreen a bitch???

I have not seen these stickers around at all.

phredgreen 06-25-2004 10:06 AM

i can hear it now, in samuel jackson's voice:

Quote:

"Describe what Phred Green looks like!"
"What I.."
"Say what again. Say what again! I dare ya, I double dare ya, you motherfucker! Say what one more goddamn time."
"He's pasty.."
"Go on!"
"He's fuzzy"
"Does he look like a bitch?"
"What?"
*BLAM*
"Aauuuh auh!"
"Does he look like a bitch?"
"Noo!"
"Then why are you trying to fuck him like a bitch, Brett?"
"I didn't.."
"Yes you did. Yes you did, Brett! You tried to fuck him and Phred Green don't like to get fucked by anybody else than Mrs. Green.

bermuDa 06-25-2004 11:56 AM

NOTW... never heard/seen that before...

grr now I have another stupid acronym bouncing around in my head

THANKS FOR MAKING MY LIFE THAT MUCH MORE COMPLICATED!!!! WTFOMGBBQWWJDNSFWTMIFFSLMAO

maleficent 06-25-2004 12:00 PM

Not of this world I would never have guessed, I don't even really understand the explanation....

I would have guessed it was some sort of political statement --- as in Not George W - what do I know, I don't understand the fish thing on the cars that I see.

Eh, don't give him credit for it. He copied word for word (with the names changed to protect the innocent) the dialogue from a scene in Pulp Fiction.

That said, I still enjoyed it :p

This may be true, but more often than not there is somebody who knows it off the top of their head.

Somebody may be an expert in the area that the question deals with.

I'm just trying to see if the TFP works like I think it works.

DelayedReaction 06-25-2004 09:03 PM

See? And now we're having a discussion about having discussions.

Temporary_User 06-25-2004 09:27 PM

Uh.....
I come here w/ my questions.
google works for a lot of stuff but now when I see one of those bumper stickers I wont have to goto google and search around, because I already have been to tfp and have received the knowledge.
I hope im on subject here :D

a meta-discussion ... cool. I got to use the word "meta" :)

Gimli 06-26-2004 07:34 AM

"General Discussion" forum implies there will be some discussion. Google doesn't offer that.

Off-topic, but continuing the theme of self-reliance, http://wordspy.com is a good site for learning about the meaning and origin of many common and not-so-common phrases.

Jackebear 06-28-2004 02:42 AM

Hey 'Bill O'Rights'.....that is a very cool DARWIN sticker.

100% with you. I think had I responded as Phred initially did someone would have told me to adjust my attitude, try to help rather than being a pain or go someplace else because that reply isn't worthy of being a TFPer. But I'm just guessing. Not that his response was terrible, just alittle condescending.

Kazic 06-28-2004 05:45 PM

so interesting how this turned out. simple to complicated in 25 posts. ;)

crow_daw 06-28-2004 06:36 PM

Well in my own personal opinion, I'd rather post questions on the TFP because its more entertaining to see the responses you get from fellow TFP'ers than to just google and read what comes up.

It's just more fun, it combines both getting your question answered and TFP interaction.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with it.

skaterpunk 06-30-2004 01:41 AM

You know whats really funny. My friend is jewish and has the jesus fish next to the darwin one. Really confuses people when they notice her symbol of whatever the jewish people like.

troit 06-30-2004 06:52 AM

Guess that haven't reach this area -- DC that is. Haven't seen one of them...yet.

Spanxxx 06-30-2004 07:58 AM

Haven't seen one yet.

I probably would have thought it stood for

Never Opress This Woman, or something

or maybe

Nosey Octopus Tossing Wombats

Well, I mean, you never know.

*Nikki* 06-30-2004 08:07 AM

Life is so much easier when you are like me and you don't pay a damn bit of attention to a sticker on someones car.

Such sweet oblivion.

Peetster 06-30-2004 08:47 AM

A GIS for "NOTW" gave an interesting result:
