Claiming conservatives stand up for their beliefs and liberals don't is the biggest pile of bullshit I've ever heard. Look at all the anti-war protests, the globalization protests. Think about nearly every major protest you've heard of in the past ten years. How many of those were conservative protests?
About the godly conservatives "showing what abortion does to an unborn child", most of the pictures they show are disgusting and fake. I'm not even going to get into the abortion debate.

My parents grew up poor and became conservatives. They raised three kids, one republican, one democrat, one independant. We turned out fine.
My liberal friend was raised by liberal parents. they are fine. My conservative friend had conservative parents. he turned out fine. Its not the values so much as the parents. The biggest difference between liberals and conservatives has to be, in my opinion, the fact that liberals kill before birth, and conservatives, after birth. Everything else is just generalized.

It's funny how when someone tells you what you want to hear it's so easy to agree with them. Then you read opposing points of view by people who have very good points. And you re-think your position. And you re-read the article. Then you're confused as all hell.
So now, to offer an opinion, I actually have to think for myself. I hate that. Here's my opinion: There are good parents, there are bad parents. There are liberals, there are conservatives. All of these sets intersect in different ways to give us many subsets. I, personally, don't have enough information to be able to relate the sizes of the different subsets to each other. I really don't think it's been studied, I think he's pulling this out of his ass. Just an opinion from a conservative who would like to agree, but it just seems too easy to agree.

I think ultimately it has more to do with the childs personality and upbringing rather then the parents political alignment. By nature, I think conservatives are more likely to enforce stricter rules, pad them with physical punishment and compliment this with vigorous morality. So political alignment, having large bearing on personalites and beliefs does play a role to a point, I'll say a conservative home is a better home, but I believe sometimes a kid's just going to do whatever the hell they want no matter what you do.

This article really pissed me off, because of the assumptions the writer makes, about liberals as a whole, about parents who have different styles than the one he thinks is right, and about people in general. He takes everything as black and white, and their world isn't that way. You can TRY to generalize things, but, in the end, the only one who can really prove my worth, as a parent, as a child, as a student, as a PERSON, is me. you can't judge me as a woman, as a computer student, as a bisexual, as a white person, as a teenager. you can only judge me as me. because just because I'm part of all of those groups, doesn't mean that I am the embodiment of all their ideals. So, to say "liberals make bad parents" is just as stupid as saying "girls like dresses". Number one, that's not true even a majority of the time, and number two, it's over generalizing. There's really no point in discussing which political philosophy is the better parent, because it doesn't matter WHAT philosophy you are, so long as you parent well. and, hey. what's the difference between a liberal and a conservative. to hear this guy talk, liberal is a synonym for commie bastard or something. is there a middle ground, or is another "with us or against us" black or white situation? what about in general, not just in this article? where does the middle ground lay, and why the hell aren't we all on it??? |
