TV cameraman killed covering dangerous intersection

Life is full of irony.

A sad but weird story if indeed she only realized after looking in the rearview mirror.

Odd.

OMAHA, Nebraska (AP) -- A television cameraman filming a story about a dangerous intersection was struck and killed by a vehicle, police said.

Jeff Frolio, 45, died Thursday night at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha.

Frolio was struck about 5 p.m. Thursday while crossing the intersection to get another tape from his vehicle, Douglas County Sheriff Tim Dunning said. He walked into oncoming traffic, Dunning said.

A 20-year veteran with station KETV, Frolio was covering a story for the evening's broadcast about two teens who died at that intersection last month.

The driver who hit Frolio was not drinking alcohol or speeding, deputies said. The speed limit of the highway is 60 mph.

The woman didn't realize she had struck a pedestrian until she looked in her rearview mirror, deputies said.

She has not been ticketed, Dunning said.

The intersection is near a hilltop and is heavily traveled from both east and west, Dunning said.

Several residents have complained the busy intersection is a hazard. But Dunning said he didn't think there was anything wrong with the highway.

"Unfortunately he walked into the path of a vehicle," Dunning said. "It's not a traffic engineering problem."

Frolio was chosen as the Nebraska Television Photographer of the Year twice in his career.

He was a good guy. He'll be missed.

Fremen 06-11-2004 09:15 PM

A shame.

RoboBlaster 06-11-2004 09:46 PM

That is really really sad.

Halx 06-11-2004 09:58 PM

Score one for irony!

maleficent 06-11-2004 10:01 PM

Uhh, how can you not know you hit a pedestrian?

Maybe she was in one of those tall vans?

MSD 06-11-2004 10:56 PM

Sorry to be insensetive, but if you're crossing a street with a speed limit of 60 mph, you're asking to be hit. I'd also like to know how an intersection can work on a road with that high a speed limit.

Am I a bad person if I can't help but laugh at this story?

I'm sorry, but... rofl

When Irony and Death team-up, everyone involved wins, except the dead guy.

MerKon4 06-11-2004 11:46 PM

actually kind of funny. You would think that someone covering a story about an intersection would know not to blatenly cross into on coming traffic with out at least looking....

Maybe not a bad person, but an insensitive asshole, sure. Jeff was a good guy and one hell of a photog. Don't forget that this is a diverse board with LOTS of people on it - some of us might just have known him . ..

Or should I start laughing when your colleagues die?

H12 06-12-2004 06:16 AM

A TALENTED MAN GOT RAN OVER?!? OMGLOLWTFBBQ!/!!?1!1!!!

Seriously, that is pretty insensitive. I never even heard of the guy, so I don't anything great to say about him, but for the talent he apparantly had and to go out like that, that is a shame.

Munku 06-12-2004 09:07 AM

How does one get run over by a car? Look, if clear cross. The ONLY way I could see it happening, would be an EXTREMELY blind curve.

It's not THAT he died, it's HOW he died. The fact that an intelligent man, who was REPORTING about the intersection being dangerous, walked in front of a car and got hit is, in my opinion, funny.

If I fell down an open manhole and died while ranting that people need to watch where they're going, I fucking HOPE everyone who heard about it laughed at me. The circumstances are funny, no matter who it is.

Peetster 06-13-2004 02:42 AM

We have two things going on here.

There is the irony of a reporter being killed while reporting the dangers of the very thing that killed him.

We also have the personal connection of one of our members to the reporter.

Commenting on the former is acceptable.

Exploiting the latter is not.

Is my warning clear?

"Several residents have complained the busy intersection is a hazard. But Dunning said he didn't think there was anything wrong with the highway."

If several residents have complained, its at the top of a hill, and 3 people are killed in one month - I would be ashamed to call it a safe intersection.

shakran 06-13-2004 08:13 AM

Perhaps this will clear it up for everyone.

And on top of that

http://b-roll.net/ubb/ultimatebb.php...c;f=1;t=006064

As you can see, it's been a tough week in the photojournalist community. We do a very dangerous job working with very dangerous equipment - think about it. Our live trucks have metal masts that can raise to 60+ feet. Raise it into powerlines, you're dead. Raise it anywhere near lightning, you're dead. Raise it on a slight incline, the van tips, and you and several onlookers are dead or injured. Compound that with the fact that the people back at the assignment desk usually have never been near a live truck and will therefore tell you to raise the mast whether there's lightning, powerlines, or God himself telling you not to, and if you don't raise it you're fired.

Then throw in the equation that whenever something happens we have to get the video. No matter where it is. Car wreck on a busy highway? Guess who's out there covering it - and remember that we can only see to the left. That big camera blocks our view to the right.

http://b-roll.net/ubb/ultimatebb.php...c;f=1;t=006098

That should sum it up for you nicely and explain why I was a little pissed off at the insensitivity displayed here.

gdr2004 06-15-2004 06:35 AM

Look both ways before you cross. Not much to it I don't believe. :-/

I was wondering the exact same thing. The mental picture of how this intersection should look just doesn't add up in my head.

Completely agreed. I don't understand insensitive people. It's like the old addage says: If you don't have nuthin' good to say, shut up.

water_boy1999 06-16-2004 09:07 AM

Irony at it's finest. I am sorry this had to happen to a talented man such as Jeff. It reminds me of the story of the Human Rights activists trying to stop the running of the bulls then were trampled to death. Sad.
