Hearing some of the clips from Reagan's life over the last couple of days has been great. His optimism, humor, intelligence, and political skill were remarkable. Just figured I'd start a thread where people could share some of their favorites. Here are some of mine:

The "surly bonds of earth" quote is from a poem (well known to all pilots) by a Canadian WWII airman named John Gillespie Magee. Three months after writing the poem (and mailing it home to his parents) he was killed in an accident in his Spitfire. He was 19. Not that is was not appropriate for Reagan to use these words, oh no, but they were not his words.

Thanks for the quote Ripsaw. When I read the text or hear the speach the Reagan gave eulogizing the Challenger astronaughts, I always get goosebumps.

Always a favorite of mine is a time he paraphrased Ben Franklin:

"You sonofabitch, you broke my rib." - Reagan, '81 to the Secret Service agent who pushed him into his car. Reagan later realized that he was shot and that the agent had possibly saved his life.

"Hollywood has no blacklist." -- Reagan, '60. FBI records have since shown that this was a lie, and that Reagan personally informed on several actors, later shown to be innocent, destroying their careers in the process.

"I would have voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964." -- Reagan, '66, on how he would have opposed the legislation that came out of the civil rights movement.

"Jefferson Davis is a hero of mine." -- Reagan, in a speech he gave to a crowd in Atlanta, GA.

While not a quote, this thread made me think about the time when the U.S. was having some sort of AIDS benefit on the lawn of the statue of liberity lawn with leaders from allover the world.

Some one cracked a joke about the statue of liberty having AIDS. Everybody was appauled (sp?). THe camera swug to the Reagans, who were laughing.

I don't get the schism of opinion there is on reagan here. I'm not in possession of all the facts, and don't pretend to be but any time anyone brings up a valid, but opposite opinion to all the trumpet blowing and stuff, they get branded a troll and ridiculed. is that the standard of debate on the TFP now?

I know this is a sad time for America, but some of the quotes Begora posted were pretty shameful, if they are accurate, no matter how you slice them.
