11-year-old girl slits classmate's throat
"Girl slits classmate's throat
By Audrey McAvoy in Tokyo June 2, 2004 AN 11-year-old girl led a fellow sixth-grader to an empty classroom during their lunch hour, slit her neck and arms with a box-cutter, and left her to bleed to death. The grisly murder at an elementary school in southern Japan yesterday sent shockwaves through the local community, leaving many asking how such a tragedy could strike in their midst. Police identified the victim as Satomi Mitarai, 12. They said she died of massive blood loss after being slashed in the neck and arms with a retractable knife used to cut paper and boxes. Authorities took her attacker into custody for questioning soon after the assault at Okubo Elementary School in Sasebo, 980 kilometres southwest of Tokyo." Linky poo: http://www.news.com.au/common/story_...55E401,00.html While definately not the world's funniest news story to bring up, for some reason, this was the first thing that came to mind when I read it:

Holy shit. I read an article once about the levels of violence among Japanese kids, this kind of thing is not as rare as you'd think.

I head from an Asian news source that the 12 year old girl insulted the 11 year olds website which led to the murder.

A review of recent Japanese productions (both anime and film) clearly shows that they are pretty fucked up (eg: Battle Royal I & II and various other similar productions) ... I think its the stress and the urge to perform and be the best that drives people insane... and these people seek either an outlet through their ART... or become violent ...
its a screwed up world we live in

what a sad and scary world this has become. Sometimes I wish I was born in the 50's so I only had to worry about nuclear anhiliation.

Over a website?! Whatever happened to the good old-fashioned hairpulling, face scratching, rolling around on the floor catfight? At what point did boxknives and guns become a viable option in schoolyard disputes?

I can kind of understand how you could pull a trigger in the heat of a moment. It's so quick and easy, But slitting someones throat and wrists is brutal. You would have plenty of time to come to your senses and call for help or something. This girl must be truly insane.

I wonder what kind of punishment she will receive ... since she is a minor and all.
My guess would be that she be treated in a mental hospital until she is 18, then tried for first degree murder.

I live and having been teaching there in a Junior High School for 5 years and this will be my last year. It is soooo fucked up here. Lots and lots of rules but no punishments.
I have seen 14 year old boys punch teachers, more than once, a gang of 14 year old boys beat the crap out of a 13 year old boy. Kids walking into the teachers room and throwing teacher's office stuff around, kids scratch teachers cars and one threw a full bottle of milk out the 2nd floor window and broke a teachers windshield. Nothing happened except to call the parents. No detention, nothing. They don't have that here. I have been telling them for 4 years to make some consequences in the rule book but that shit goes in one ear and out the other. And of course the parents come and say "No way...my son/daughter is an angel...it's your fault!!". Just 2 weeks ago at my school...a 14 year old piece of shit boy let the gas out of the bunsen burner hook-ups and lit a match....booooooom. 8 kids went to the hospital...and the school kept it quiet. Only the parents of the boy had to call the 8 other parents and apologize for their loser son. The next day he was back at school. Fuck this...I am outta here. Can't wait to go home.

Yes, I am in Japan, teaching in Nagano.
The kids don't screw with me because they know I will hit back. Japanese don't do anything...they just take it. I guess that is one advantage of being a gaijin...you get away with a lot of shit. But I do hate my job. There is absolutely no joy in teaching a class of 35-40 kids where 30 of them hate the class, or you, or the Japanese teacher you are supposed to be helping. That is a shame.

That's just messed. Why can't parents actually teach their kids the difference between right and wrong? Why do they instead leave it to the schools to do everything for them? (And that goes towards all countries, not just Japan... because here in the US parents don't teach their kids anything basic like that anymore.)

Welcome to Japan.
When the kids commit a crime, they certainly go all the way here... Jackebear I know how you feel. I have also taught at a junior high school in Tokyo although it was considered a good school and so they were better behaved. You're absolutely right about teaching 35-40 kids, most of them couldn't give a shit about learning English. English here is just for decoration purposes: advertising, fashion, movies & music etc. Nobody really uses it, but it makes them feel that they are an "international" or cosmopolitan country. I can't stand teaching English any more, will never go back to that if I can help it...
