What are these chest pains??

I woke up really early this morning in pain. It's my chest, the right side of it. Sharp stinging pains.

They are really awful when I'm laying down, which is why I'm now awake. The pain is tolerable with normal activity, but if I breathe deeply (like to blow my stuffy nose) it hurts like hell.

I seriously can't lay back down to sleep some more. It just hurts way too much. I think it's the muscle around my right lung that hurts. It's hard to tell since I've never had anything like this before.

Anyone know what on earth might be wrong with me?

I don't think that it is good to get medical advice from a forum and you should probably go see a doctor no matter what anyone here says.

My brother had somthing similar to what you describe. He also thought it was just muscles. He kept on putting off getting it checked. One day he found it impossible to walk home so he decided to go to the hospital. When they checked him out they said that it was a colapsed lung.

I once pulled my chest muscles. I did a backwards dive and overextended backwards without warming up or stretching beforehand. The pain was excrutiating and I couldnt lie down. Sitting up or standing it was fine. I had to sleep upright in a chair for 2 nights.

Could be your muscle, could be a collapsed lung, could be some damage to a rib, or it could be a sign of a Heart Attack...

You might consider waiting one or two days, perhaps take some pain killers. If it's the muscle, the pain should be gone by then. If it's something more serious, you can go to the doctor, or you could be dead by then.

Seeing as how I tend to avoid doctors like the plague, I'll probably wait a day or so and see if my condition improves. If not, I guess I'll seek real medical attention.

Heh, thanks for the advice.

Since you say you have a stuffed nose I am going to assume you have either a cold or severe allergies. With that being said, it is possible you could have a touch of bronchitis.

As others have said, don't take the word of the forum as truth, it's all conjecture since I ain't no doctor.

Best to go and get it overwith. The sooner you go the better.

Head on over to www.webmd.com and let their generalized symtoms worry you beyond your worst nightmares. Go to a walk in med clinic or something and have them Xray your chest.

Also Vioxx is a good muscle relaxer, I used that when i had chest pains about 8 months ago.

might be heart burn... i have acid reflux disorder and if i'm not good about taking my medicine, i sometimes end up with a burnt esophugus and chest movements hurt.

but let a doctor make any diagnosis. better safe than in a pine box 6 feet under.

I'd say have a doctor check it out... I don't particularly like doctors either, but I'd rather find out if it was something bad before it got too bad.

I had something similar to that a few years back. I sat down on my bed propping myself up with my rolly-chair thing for a good 12 or so hours until someone woke up to tell them about it. I went to the doctor that afternoon, but I forget what they said it was, they just told me to go home and relax and it got better after a while.

well, I had a collapsed lung once.
associated chest pain is a symptom.
there's a whole medical explanation involving "blebs."
these are weak spots in lungs (congenital) which burst.
at some point the lung is weakened enough to actually collapse.
a collapsed lung is the most painful experience I have ever experienced or imagined.
and for some reason to fix it, they insert a steel straw shaped pointed spike in your chest without an anesthetic.
so they use 3 guys to hold you down.
an attached tube is used to pump air into your lung until the pressure is sufficient to reinflate it
- another one of those once-in-a-lifetime pain sensations.

hopefully this isn't what you have.
but you do have one of the symptoms...

you should really go to a doctor if its that bad. people here can only give you educated guesses, but a doctor could probably tell you what it is and give you some medication if you need it.

I don't know what I have. I think if I had a collapsed lung I wouldn't have made it this far.

Breathing a bit more shallow, pains with breathing. I think my biggest tell-tale sign is when I lay down. Laying on my back makes the inside of my chest scream. That worries me that something might be horribly wrong internally.

Anyway, an update :

I've been enduring this horrible pain for about 20 hours now. I'm exhausted, but I can't sleep because the pain won't let me.

Regardless of what may or may not be wrong with me, I will be visiting a doctor as soon as I can get to one. This is saying a lot because I hate visits to the doctor with a passion.

I'll let you guys know how things turn out. I'll also try to stay optimistic.

Wow... Good luck man. I checked this thread because i too sometimes get mysterious chest pains. I hope you are ok. not religious, but I'll pray for you now anyway.... Prayed. It usually works. Don't know why as I don't really believe in "God." I'm pretty sure you'll be ok though.

Okay, I went to the doctor today. It turns out my condition is surprisingly trivial considering how much pain it has caused me.

A spasming muscle between my ribs.

It just reminds me of how frail the human body is when something so simple as that can prevent a person from doing the most basic of things (such as sleep and breathe normally). I was almost disappointed by the diagnosis. Like, "That's it??"

Anyway, the doctor gave me an anti-flammatory and I already feel significantly better. I still can't lay down to sleep, but I can angle myself much lower than I could, allowing me to sleep.

Thanks for all the posts!

Congratulations. Mysterious chest pains can cause quite alot of anxiety which tends to exacerbate your symptoms. Don't forget to drink plenty of water and definitely consider taking a calcium supplement. Muscles love calcium.
