Enough ice to sink a ship.

Stunning photos.

The pictures taken were on the Coast Guard ship Sir William Alexander during the search for the fishing boat El Loda Cash which went down in the Bay of Fundy.

It is belived the ice caused the fishing boat to sink.

Pics removed.

My father has been out on several ice breakers with fisheries and oceans as the science cheif. He has some pretty harry photos like these but those are definatly an extreme.

Tempboy 05-02-2004 08:13 PM

Wow..
I wonder how many ships have been lost like that over the past few hundred years.

bond007 05-02-2004 08:41 PM

Fremen 05-03-2004 08:33 AM

The inside of my freezer used to look like that.

Thanks for the unusual pics, chris.

^^beat me to the corny pun^^

That's insane! However, ice floats on water (water is the only compound which the solid state floats on the liquid state). I suppose the shear weight of it on the boat would be enough to sink it though.

it was more of a problem on wooden ships when it helped break the masts and would FUBAR the rigging. And of course there are many stories like the Endurance from the famous Shackleton Expedition that come to mind where a ship were caught in the ice and crushed liked an egg.

Mondak 05-03-2004 06:38 PM

Great pictures! I would like to take a sledge hammer to ice for a few minutes to burn calories and frustration, but then I would want out.

Pragma 05-03-2004 06:57 PM

Damn - nothing but respect for the Coasties who go out in that shit to save other people's lives. You wouldn't see me on a cutter in that!

-Ever- 05-04-2004 02:52 PM

Well, I live in Texas so something like that would be a big shock to me. I'd probably find it pretty fun though - I just love the snow.

iamnormal 05-13-2004 11:50 PM

They should have made the boat out of Pykrete.

My internet behaviour sometimes crosses the line and conversing an image is just a second nature for me so I hope that I caused you no grief with the post.

Thank you for putting the link up for what are just stark reminders of life that is real.
Apologies again and I will PM you.
