When Life Imitates National Lampoon's Vacation

Woman Drove for Days with Dead Mother in Car
Fri Apr 30, 2004 07:24 AM ET

MIAMI (Reuters) - An Oklahoma woman drove around for days with her mother's decomposing body in the passenger seat of her car, Florida investigators said on Thursday.

Sheriff's deputies found the woman's body on Tuesday in a car parked outside a Wal-Mart store in the northeast Florida city of Palm Coast. The medical examiner ruled the 65-year-old woman had died of natural causes at least five days earlier.

The woman's daughter, in her mid-30s, was inside the 24-hour store, where she had been shopping since the night before. She was incoherent and unable to give a clear account of her journey to Florida, Flagler County Sheriff's investigators said.

Police went to investigate when other shoppers complained about the odor coming from the parked car.

They traced the auto registration and pieced together details of the trip from receipts found in the car.

The women had lived together in Covington, Oklahoma, and left there several weeks ago. They traveled through Texas and North Carolina on the 1,300-mile trip to Florida, the investigators said. It was not clear if the mother died at a stop-off or in the car.

The daughter was hospitalized for psychiatric examination. No charges were filed because the mother's death was from natural causes. No further details were available.

Very strange... but I guess the psycological condition of the daughter explains why she left the mother in the car. 1,300 miles can do strange things to people, I guess...

huh... I honestly want to know what was going through that woman's head. I mean, she was shopping in a Wal-mart since the night before according to the article... so wouldn't her being in a store for some 6 hours be kinda strange?

I know--it seems weird that the manager wasn't informed of this odd customer. What would a woman who just had a mental breakdown shop for anyway?

I wonder what type of drugs she was on. Honestly, 5 days!?! If someone doesn't move or eat. You can't be that dumb to notice when someone is dead.

Maybe they were shopping for shoes.

Huge effort.

Can take days.

One had stamina.

One didn't.

naw... there's a simple enough explaination for all of this:

she was in a hurry and wanted to use the carpool lane.

Yall seem surprised to hear about something strange. Personally, I'd be surprised to hear something that isn't strange with all those news being all about strange shits these days...

First, dead employee thought to be "sleeping" on the floor and now this...

The grandma in national lampoon's vacation dies in the back seat of the Grizwald's station wagon, and they drive around for a while before they notice she is dead.

Umm... because in the movie the old woman dies in the car while they're on a road trip and they transport her somewhere... while she's dead.
