Modelling
Not sure if this is the right forum to post this in. If not, please move it.
My friend was out shopping, and was approached by a lady who works for Mary Kay and asked if she would be willing to do face modelling for them. Sounds like she would not get payed for it, simply pampered. I told her to find out if she can use the images for a possible portfolio, but she wants to know what else she should ask this lady to make sure she is getting the best she can out of this opportunity? Anyone familiar with this, I really don't know anything about it, and would just like to help my friend out so she might be able to open herself to future modelling opportunities using this venture. Any ideas, or relevant questions to ask this lady would be appreciated. Thanks. |

Any photos you do whatsoever can be used in your portfolio. Pay or not payed. That much I know. I also know its a pain in the royal ass to get anywhere unless you have someone whose job is _only_ finding jobs for aspiring models.

My wife is a makeup artist. She does freelance work and knows a lot about the modeling industry. There is one thing that I have learned about it. It's just like the movie or TV business. What I am saying is that she basically has to take what she is offered. Of course she can use the images for a portfolio. That is common practice. But she has no pull over the opportunity and she better not make any demands if she would like to keep the gig. They will find someone who is willing to do what they want if she makes a stink over ANYTHING. Unless your friend is Tyra Banks of course.

No company is worth modeling for JUST for the experience. Ask for money.

but that's why there are internships, fellowships, etc. because it gives someone some opportunity at "starting up" or "getting a foot in the door".... i did volunteer work before I ever got a job... knowing the Mary Kay business model... this lady is probably one of their home consultants, and she can always use a pretty face to get make up applied to. The other hope is that when she sees the look and effects she may become a customer.

If it's the same sitation as offered to my wife, the lady just wants her to come over the her house and put make-up on to show to parties--like TubberWare parties. One of our friends, a prior model, suggests modeling only for enjoyment--but she doesn't mean to do it for free in any way, only that it wasn't the best path for her as a job. So if your friend thinks its fun, go for it. But this probably isn't the gig that is going to do anything for her career. |

My suggestion -- have your friend ask for free make-up. That way the Mary Kay rep is getting the pretty face and your friend is getting goods she would otherwise have to pay for herself for free.

She was just wanting to sell your friend make-up. They call it being a face model, but the only time they take pictures is if they do a before and after shot for their own portfolio. Just to show other women and try to get them to do a makeover too. I sell MK, but only to people I already know. I don't go out and attack people in malls or stores. But it's good stuff and if she wants to try it she can for free. She would get a free gift if she has a party and invites her friends over. Well, that's usually how it works.
