LONDON (Reuters) - Two nuclear submarines, one British and one American, surfaced near the North Pole on Monday for an impromptu game of soccer, Britain's Royal Navy said.

The two vessels surfaced through two naturally occurring gaps in the ice about half a mile from each other after completing a joint underwater exercise.

"The crews of HMS Tireless and USS Hampton are gearing up for a game of football," Commander John Parris said.

"It will probably be English football (soccer) since I doubt our lot know much about playing American football," Parris told Reuters from Portsmouth in southern England. "I expect there will also be the mother of all snowball fights."

In addition to the military element both ships were carrying scientists interested in tracking signs of global warming.

The world's first nuclear-powered submarine, USS Nautilus, was the first vessel to navigate under the North Pole in 1958.

That would be fun to watch. But there probably never be pictures of it taken.

Ever hear about that one Christmas during WWII when German and British front-line soldiers sang carols, exchanged gifts, and played soccer during a World War I Christmas truce?

According to the Urban Legends Reference Pages this is true.

I never heard that one. Great story, but sad that we can't live in perpetual peace.

It is not so very strange for events like that to happen. It's kind of ironic how soldiers can get along and it seems the only reason they are fighting is because the people in power far away from the fighting are telling them what to do.

That soccer game would be crazy though, a half mile long field, they'd probably just let everyone play, so guess maybe 300 players.

And being goalie would definately suck in that situation.

Man, it seems awfully cold to be playing any sports up there.

Also happened during the War Between the States back in 1860-something; I forget the particular battle that I read about it now.

Nice to know there's fun in all jobs. Well, most. Some.

one of my first thoughts after reading the inital post were the pictures of the men in the Shackleton Expediton playing football or something similar. It is always interesting to see such frivolity (or in that case needed release) even when your survival is very much in question.

Somebody had to ask but...

Who won?

Gortexfogg 04-20-2004 04:54 AM

I'd guess the British won since they're much more into football than Americans are. The percentage of guys onboard their sub that know how to play football is probably higher than the percentage of guys who know how to play on the American sub.

My understanding is that truces of this kind weren't altogether uncommon, especially around religious holidays in the past, when religion was inextricably woven into social and political life. (George Washington crossed the Delaware River to surprise the Hessians on Christmas night, when it was assumed all were drunk or asleep). I think we look at the WWII event with nostalgia, especially since it will likely never happen again.
