The future of law enforcement?
Check out this "speculative" advert for a security company set sometime in the not so distant future.

crazy thing that came to mind...that robot is worth more than that town it's patrolling.
and it seemed to have human like reactions to certain actions

Bah, one RPG/several AK shots to the back of its legs (no armor in the video) would destroy the entire thing for all practical purposes.

Its way too humanistic in form and function. I would imagine a more realistic unit would not travel on two legs and certainly wouldn't have to turn it's head to view different directions. Also, no armor to speak of. That thing is a sitting duck. The only way it could be effective in that form is to our many thousands of them into the city. That would be more like occupation than enforcement though.

This is a fake special effects video created by a company that does CGI work for TV and movie productions. This type of robot is still a good bit away- and as many pointed out it's horribly flawed in many ways.

I bet a couple of Jawas could take out that thing in seconds. I don't think robot cops should take the place of regular law enforcement. There are many situations where human judgement and compasion would be more beneficial than robot logic. Also, robots would be plain scary to many people. Law enforcement constantly tries to present a posititve image to the community. Imagine robots running the DARE program...I just don't like the idea, as cool as it may seem.

Nevermind AI -- AI is hard. Police-by-wire. If a human being where driving such a "robot" remotely, we'd have police able to police without being in danger.

I agree with Gortexfogg. A cop's job does not break down to just walking around looking for criminals to shoot. There are human judgements that need to be made, and just the human interaction itself can defuse situations where a robot's presence will only cause harm.
Now for dangerous wartime situations, this sort of robot, if properly equipped, would be ideal. Its just dumb for the cream of the crop of a country's youth to be killed off because some politicians thought it would be a good idea. Send robots instead.

My initial reaction is that thing is a relatively LONG way off. We have barely developed robots that can walk at all and stairs still present some difficulty, never mind jumping from car to car...I know, I know, Mr. M. all in fun...

I dont know if there will be tecnology like that anytime soon. We barely have robots walking on two legs right now and its not even close to having a human gait. I say that all they will be used for (if they ever get something remotely like it) is when you enter an unauthorized area and you cross the yellow line and then ZZap.
