The future of law enforcement?

Check out this "speculative" advert for a security company set sometime in the not so distant future.

Scary, as its probably going to happen.

In the back of my mind, I see 1984 coming around...

slant eyes 04-16-2004 12:27 AM

crazy thing that came to mind...that robot is worth more than that town it's patrolling.

and it seemed to have human like reactions to certain actions

punx1325 04-16-2004 12:35 AM

I could totally see that happening. Part of me thinks it is a good idea and another part of me can see a lot of harm coming from that idea.

moonstrucksoul 04-16-2004 09:15 AM

that was so cool. OMG i want one. that would be great in my opinion. i will probably catch hell, but it's a great idea.

Destrox 04-16-2004 09:27 AM

Why is a robot flinching from bullets hitting near by? Isnt that a reaction of fear? Which they wouldnt have....

Either way, cool as fuck.

I expect because it's a cgi replacement of a real cop.

The robot looks like a bunny!

Cynthetiq 04-16-2004 11:39 AM

we'll soon be watching roboCOPS... :)

mattevil 04-16-2004 11:44 AM

Has terminator taught us nothing? I swear almost all of the post apocalyptical arnold films seem plausible now.

nanofever 04-16-2004 11:51 AM

Bah, one RPG/several AK shots to the back of its legs (no armor in the video) would destroy the entire thing for all practical purposes.

Nazggul 04-16-2004 12:24 PM

Its way too humanistic in form and function. I would imagine a more realistic unit would not travel on two legs and certainly wouldn't have to turn it's head to view different directions. Also, no armor to speak of. That thing is a sitting duck. The only way it could be effective in that form is to our many thousands of them into the city. That would be more like occupation than enforcement though.

analog 04-16-2004 12:47 PM

This is a fake special effects video created by a company that does CGI work for TV and movie productions. This type of robot is still a good bit away- and as many pointed out it's horribly flawed in many ways.

those would be sensors (for looking around corners and stuff, i would think) if they got the idea off this guy :)http://cinecover.free.fr/divx/appleseed_front.jpg

Gortexfogg 04-17-2004 07:04 PM

I bet a couple of Jawas could take out that thing in seconds. I don't think robot cops should take the place of regular law enforcement. There are many situations where human judgement and compasion would be more beneficial than robot logic. Also, robots would be plain scary to many people. Law enforcement constantly tries to present a posititve image to the community. Imagine robots running the DARE program...I just don't like the idea, as cool as it may seem.

denim 04-17-2004 07:11 PM

YOU HAVE 20 SECONDS TO COMPLY!

Yakk 04-18-2004 06:07 AM

Nevermind AI -- AI is hard. Police-by-wire. If a human being where driving such a "robot" remotely, we'd have police able to police without being in danger.

Nefir 04-18-2004 06:37 AM

I agree with Gortexfogg. A cop's job does not break down to just walking around looking for criminals to shoot. There are human judgements that need to be made, and just the human interaction itself can defuse situations where a robot's presence will only cause harm.

Now for dangerous wartime situations, this sort of robot, if properly equipped, would be ideal. Its just dumb for the cream of the crop of a country's youth to be killed off because some politicians thought it would be a good idea. Send robots instead.

Asuka{eve} 04-18-2004 11:11 AM

OH NOES its the rise of the machines!!!

Mephisto2 04-18-2004 12:58 PM

I think people are missing the point here.

This is not meant to be real (obviously), but is kind of a "what if" exercise.

For want of a better term, it's "just a bit of fun"...

HAHAHAHA  That's exactly what I was thinking, the Ed-209

Ilow 04-18-2004 03:23 PM

My initial reaction is that thing is a relatively LONG way off. We have barely developed robots that can walk at all and stairs still present some difficulty, never mind jumping from car to car...I know, I know, Mr. M. all in fun...

manalone 04-18-2004 03:37 PM

That's cool
but they did totally rip off appleseed

Asuka{eve} 04-18-2004 04:42 PM

I dont know if there will be tecnology like that anytime soon. We barely have robots walking on two legs right now and its not even close to having a human gait. I say that all they will be used for (if they ever get something remotely like it) is when you enter an unauthorized area and you cross the yellow line and then ZZap.

Tempboy 04-19-2004 02:04 AM

Hahah.. ED209 was the first thing I thought of too

water_boy1999 04-19-2004 04:02 PM

That thing would be BADD ASS!!!! Not like it will happen inmy lifetime, but I am sure smart technology will eventually take a role in law enforcement.
