Easter Bunny gets a beating

Quote:
Church's Easter show shocks crowd with bunny whipping

GLASSPORT, Pa. (AP) — First, the Passion of the Christ. Now, the torment of the Easter Bunny?
It may not have been as gruesome as Mel Gibson's movie, but many parents and children got upset when a church trying to teach about Jesus' crucifixion performed an Easter show with actors whipping the Easter bunny and breaking eggs.

People who attended Saturday's show at Glassport's memorial stadium quoted performers as saying, "There is no Easter bunny," and described the show as being a demonstration of how Jesus was crucified.

Melissa Salzmann, who brought her 4-year-old son J.T., said the program was inappropriate for young children. "He was crying and asking me why the bunny was being whipped," Salzmann said.

Patty Bickerton, the youth minister at Glassport Assembly of God, said the performance wasn't meant to be offensive. Bickerton portrayed the Easter rabbit and said she tried to act with a tone of irreverence.

"The program was for all ages, not just the kids. We wanted to convey that Easter is not just about the Easter bunny, it is about Jesus Christ," Bickerton said.

Performers broke eggs meant for an Easter egg hunt and also portrayed a drunken man and a self-mutilating woman, said Jennifer Norelli-Burke, another parent who saw the show in Glassport, a community about 10 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

"It was very disturbing," Norelli-Burke said. "I could not believe what I saw. It wasn't anything I was expecting."

Unbelievable. I'm glad I wasn't one of the parents in the audience or I probably would have wanted to beat the minister.

Thoughts anyone?

When my wife was young, her parents became born agains, joining the ASG. Lucky for them, they left after about 5 years. From the stories she told me, they are a scary church. This story doesn't surprise me one bit. When she was about 7, they locked the kids her age in a dark room and made them listen to "satanic" metal to scare them away from it.

Being forced to listen to thrash/satan/speed metal constitutes child abuse in my book...

lol, what you call child abuse, I'd call exposing them to true mucisianship. None of the bands that everyone was all pissed on at in the 80s were actually satanic anyways.

I call being forced to listen to Jimmy Buffet or country music child abuse.

At what point in your life do you start to think that beating up the Easter Bunny in front of kids is a good religious message?

"See little Timmy, the Easter Bunny is being killed for our sins. It's kind of like how we celebrate Christmas cause it's Santa Clause's birthday. Now run along and give oral pleasure to another 12yr old in the parking lot."

That's a rather kind way of puting it.
I think it's best that I keep my opinion to myself.

Fremen, funny pic. How long do you think it's gonna take for some people to bitch?

I've seen the pic before, and I think it's kinda funny. It helps that you can tell it's road kill and doesn't look like Sixate beat it to death.

As far as the article is concerned, I thought that was humerous as well, although I did feel bad for the kid who was asking why the bunny was being whipped. The easter bunny doesn't really have anything to do with Christ being crucified. He's scarred for life.

reminds me a lot of the church run haunted house here... they advertised it like a regular haunted house but when they got there it had a depiction of a guy getting shot, a girl getting an abortion, and a drunk driver going thru a windshield... then after that you get to go see those people begging for forgiveness and being rejected and sent to hell...

heres a link from the school paper about it... http://www.universitydaily.net/vnews...9?in_archive=1

YES!

As far as the article goes, some people are majorly fucked in the head, and that's really all that this boils down to for me.

This is a lack of common sense really. Children especially younger don't understand symbolism that well without it being explained outright and there's often a lot of room for error even then. I personally don't really understand the message they could even be trying to get across besides the violence that the crucifixion portrays. How could the kids even possibly glean a meaningful message anyway?

I think you have to admit the image of the Easter Bunny being flogged is kind of amusing?

That is very pathetic symbolism; when you have to whip down a rabbit right before Easter in front of children, something is wrong.

I remember my cousin doing a skit at church one time that involved beating the easter bunny to death to a christian metal song that said the easter bunny didn't exist. Everyone got pissed and some kid cried.

I lololo'ed for so many reasons. "lol, nerds. lol, everyones pissed, LOL CRYING KID!!"

Indeed. The same people who thought this was okay were the ones who took their small children to see Passion of the Christ. Talk about scarred for life...

It is idiotic that this church thought that this program was a good idea. Still, it is a little silly to use this as a means of condemning all religions.

Easter is not just about the Easter bunny, it is about Jesus Christ. Well, that is true and they can talk about but they should not do some thing like that!!!
My church still had easter egg hunts when I was younger and they still do.

While it's not fair to lump all religion into one beleaguered group, based on the actions of a few asshole fundamentalists...I find myself doing the same thing. Yeah, I've added this to my list of why fundies are not worth my time. Were it my child, however, that minister could look forward to paying for years of intense psychological counseling.

My brother told me about this and I couldn't help but giggle. I mean, it's horrible, but it's hillarious from a "Why would this EVER be a good idea" perspective.

Now the image of that haunted house JStrider mentioned is going to give me nightmares...that's sick, IMHO.
