Surgeons implant glittering shapes into eye's membrane

Updated: 4:00 p.m. ET April 07, 2004AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - Body piercing and tattoos make way. The latest fashion trend to hit the Netherlands is eyeball jewelry.

Dutch eye surgeons have implanted tiny pieces of jewelry called “JewelEye” in the mucous membrane of the eyes of six women and one man in cosmetic surgery pioneered by an ophthalmic surgery research and development institute in Rotterdam.

The procedure involves inserting a 0.13 inch wide piece of specially developed jewelry -- the range includes a glittering half-moon or heart -- into the eye’s mucous membrane under local anaesthetic at a cost of $610 to $1,232.

“In my view it is a little more subtle than (body) piercing. It is a bit of a fun thing and a very personal thing for people,” said Gerrit Melles, director of the Netherlands Institute for Innovative Ocular Surgery.

The piece of jewelry is inserted in the conjunctiva -- the mucous membrane lining the inner surface of the eyelids and front of the eyeball -- in sterile conditions using an operating microscope in a procedure taking about 15 minutes.

“Without doing any harm to the eye we can implant a jewel in the conjunctiva,” Melles said. “So far we have not seen any side effects or complications and we don’t expect any in the future.”

The Rotterdam-based institute, which develops new ocular surgical techniques in corneal, cataract and retinal surgery, developed and patented the jewelry made with special materials and the surgical procedure.

The institute, which carries out the procedure in cooperation with an eye clinic near the city of Utrecht, said it has a waiting list for people who wanted the implant.

I saw more pictures of that on Yahoo's most emailed photos page. I think it's pretty crazy. A peircing is different in that you don't usually look at it when speaking to the person.

This sounds okay. It's good that they're doing this kind of research. I'd be tempted to use the technology if they ever came up with something useful.

I'm more with Cynthetiq. It may be useful later, after they debug it, true. Implant something to allow night vision, for instance, and/or heat vision. Superman-implants, anyone? REPLACE the retina completely.

Piercings, tattos, I get that, and most of the time they look good. But eye jewelry! Not only does it look awful, but I don't even want to think about the risks of something like that. What happens if you get knocked in the face somehow? A black eye turns into blindness, yay. If you want to mess with your eyes, get colored contacts. I hope this trend dies out very quickly.

I wouldn't even call it a trend. Seems to me like some more extreme body mod like hook hanging which only a small handful of people do.

...And i tell ye, those people wearing sunglasses... Freaks.

All that glass so close to your eye? what happens if they get hit? have a car wreck? get a wasp caught between the lense and their eye?

If it's comfortable for the wearer, has no known side effects, then what is wrong with it?

It's just squeamishnessess, anything new that people do to cosmetically alter their appearance will always be called freakish by the vast majority. Especially if it involves needles or scalpels.

Earrings, glasses, caps on teeth, breast implants, penile extensions, mole/wart removal, necklaces, shaving, whatever... there's a risk to doing and wearing pretty much everything.

We usually forget that, because we have to.

So by all natural you mean no rings , necklaces, earrings, toerings, anything that is considered JEWELRY is looped into what you said Boo.

So if you wear clothing. Yer not being natural either cause this is a accessorie as well.

Anyways its just a stupid point.

I find it to be different. And different is good.

But thats my opinion and we all know what opinions are like.

I must be old. My first thought was, "whats the point?" And the thought that something could go wrong and blindness as a result.
My 13yr thinks its the cats meow but would never pay that much.
Amazing what people will do to get noticed. Almost pathetic.
