I'm for an upgrade once the new version is stable and has any bugs worked out. The upgrade is basically inevitable, no point in holding it off.

I don't have any preference if the current posts are kept, it has been a year since the last reset and I can't remember any major trauma resulting from it.

brandon11983 05-30-2004 02:25 PM

I would like to see vb3 enacted. It would be great if the database could be imported.

NoSoup 05-30-2004 05:55 PM

I'd stick with what we've got, I love it here :D

That being said, if we do upgrade, I'd like to keep the threads....

oldtimer 05-30-2004 06:12 PM

Also, upgrading to vB3 doesn't necessarily mean we'll have to give up our journals too. :D ;)

I think a poll would serve this thread (and Hal) well.

Halx 05-30-2004 07:13 PM

nah, I made my decision. I'm waiting for the vb3 Journal to get released.

brandon11983 05-30-2004 08:37 PM

So were going to upgrade then? Cool. When is the vb3 Journal coming out? Are you going to import the old stuff over, or do the clean slate approach?

However, if we do make the switch, I have no problems with a 'fresh start.' It seems like it would be the easiest and safest way to make the switch.

This saved me the time of thinking for myself and saying the same thing.

I vote for v2, Matt's chat reminds me of online gamer forums and such, I really dislike that look, I love TFP's look because its unique and sexah!

Halx 05-31-2004 10:03 AM

i'm surprised everyone is saying that vb3 looks generic when it's the newer version and vb2 has been out for years. Even more, I hardly changed anything with the templates to customize for the TFP.

Anyways, as soon as the journal addon for vb3 is released with a conversion tool, I'll be running the whole database through conversion.

tecoyah 05-31-2004 10:17 AM

Thanx Halx....good to know

glasscutter43 05-31-2004 09:37 PM

A firm believer in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Cableguy 06-01-2004 08:24 AM

I think I agree with Hal on this one, especially if the whole process can be completed without the loss of all the original works on the forum. But hey, if you can import all the db's, why the hell not!

troit 06-02-2004 06:53 AM

My opinion -- we upgrade to v.3 but only after shutting down for a couple of days. Being without TFP for a few days would allow members to re-evaluate their membership to TFP. They will either flock back to TFP with reckless abandon or not come back at all. IMO -- In either case TFP is the winner and everyone will be able to maintain the identity they have worked so hard to create.

cowudders14 06-04-2004 12:58 PM

I have to go with the keep the threads etc option, even if it means a couple of days of downtime. I'll happily wait for a couple of days to get my threads back, and get the new board, particularly if it will make your admin job easier.
No offence for the amount of work it will entail, but I would really appreciate keeping the threads etc as they are quite invaluble and thier loss would be tragic. Journals too.

Having said that, Hal: Thanks for asking and it's your baby.

irseg 06-04-2004 01:11 PM

I run vBulletin 3 on another site. It's nicer, but not so much so that I'd upgrade a properly operating vb2 forum that doesn't need the new features.

I've seen a few formerly successful forums falter because they upgraded the software and made everyone re-register. A lot of people didn't like the changes, were pissed about losing their accounts and post counts, didn't want to take the time to re-register, and never came back.

Halx 06-04-2004 01:16 PM

irseg, if people get pissed about post counts and don't come back, they aren't TFP material. We've been through this drill before .. a couple times... and each time, the TFP comes back stronger than ever.

I don't anticipate losing the database though, I'm gonna do a trial run before I go through with it completely.

DEI37 06-04-2004 06:46 PM

I think I'd leave it alone. It works well, I think.

cowudders14 06-05-2004 03:30 AM

Hal: Any further knowledge about when the journal option is to be released and the tilted upgrade project gets the green light? ;)

Psycho Dad 06-05-2004 06:43 AM

I've always believed in the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" idea.

illesturban 06-05-2004 08:22 AM

sounds good to me that if you're gonna switch over, to wait until the journals can be moved over as well and make sure that we can also have the current posts converted over to the new format as well. good plan so far!

Undercover_Man 06-06-2004 11:04 AM

I think you should switch...BUT...you should do some research on the problems other admins have had with THEIR forums...HardForum changed and they ran into lots of unforeseen problems...they're still recovering...might wanna do a FULL backup on this forum just incase something screws up big time so you can revert back to this forums again and try again...HardForum was down for more than a month

On the other hand...SlickDeals converted to the newer version with no problems at all that I can see...I don't even remember any down time...I guess it depends on how much you know about the inner workings of the forums...how it works

Maybe you could ask some of the ppl from other forums who have had experience in upgrading to the newer version to come and help...talk them and see what kind of problems that they ran into so you can prepare for those problems if they come up

- Undercover Man

P.S.: As for the Journal problem...AFTER you successfully upgrade the forum to the newer version you could load the old version up again and delete EVERYTHING except the journals and have just the journals working on the older version...kinda like the "start fresh and archive the old" idea...keep everything (cept for the Journals) and upgrade 100% and then have the other forum with just the journals in it...

Just an idea

ariekitten 06-06-2004 03:31 PM

ok i would prefer just staying the course so to speak, but if we do switch over, i do not want a fresh start. i worked really hard to get my avatar back after tfp3 crashed, and also my journal is sorta something i can come back and look on to see how i've improved. but whatever you think hal! :)
