Yes, baby screams ARE annoying

I once read that the human mind has evolved such that the particular tone, pitch and volume of baby screams and cries are especially annoying. The argument goes that this makes them more difficult to annoy and improves the chances of their mothers attending to them when they call (for food etc).

In any case, here's an interesting article.

Quote:
Baby screams to fight Al Qaeda
By staff writers
March 12, 2004

AMERICAN soldiers in Iraq will this month be armed with a stun gun that uses a baby's high-pitched scream to bring enemies to their knees.

The "Secret Scream" gun fires sonic "bolts" across distances as far as 300m at up to 145db, with results ranging from excruciating agony to permanent deafness - or even death after a prolonged burst.

Sonic boom: Troops in Afghanistan may no longer need explosives to flush out the enemy / AFP

The weapon consists of a large megaphone on an armoured vehicle, aimed by a computer. It will be used to control rioters and target gunmen.

The Pentagon reportedly made an order for a prototype of similar weapons last July.

They visited American Technology Corporation, run by Woody Norris, who is a pioneer in ultrasound technology.

"(For) most people, even if they plug their ears, it will produce the equivalent of an instant migraine. Some people, it will knock them on their knees," he said.

The device emits so-called "sonic bullets" along a narrow, intense beam up to 145 decibels, 50 times the human threshold of pain.

The baby scream can be projected at such high levels that it can literally leave a victim's skull vibrating, Mr Norris claims.

The pioneering aspect of Mr Norris's work is based on the direct path his sonic bullets take. Previous attempts to create such a weapon proved difficult because sound travelled in all directions, harming bystanders near to any specific target.

US defence department officials are reportedly keen on the weapon in the hunt for al-Qaeda operatives in Afghanistan.

With sound ricocheting in their tight cave hideouts, experts believe terrorists fighting US forces would be flushed out quickly.

Marine Colonel Peter Dotto told the American ABC network: "They would have to come out and they probably would come out with their hands over their ears so they would be very easy to subdue at that point."

The technology developed by Norris could also be picked up by retail companies hoping to sell their products.

Sounds such soft drinks being poured over ice could be directed at passers by to subliminally make them feel like a drink. It could also be used in home entertainment to direct television or hi-fi sounds away from those in the house not wishing to be disturbed.
I think it's mildly amusing that we move from high-tech wonder weapons to subliminal advertising and consumerism in one article. Welcome to the 21st century.

Fiction or not, it sounds like an effective weapon. I know I personally cannot stand the high pitched squealing of infants.

I could go on and on.

It's not satire. It's true. "Sonic" non-lethal weapons are a fact. I'm just surprised to actually see them deployed. Whether the technology make it to commerical use, though, is to be seen.

I'm not surprised that it is real. Sound technology has really evolved. We are able to pretty accurately represent geology 3 miles or deeper in the ground just from sonic waves.

Yeah, this thing is for real. I saw something on tv about this very thing and they showed a guy in the path of "the beam" and the guy just dropped right to his knees. But I think that instead of a baby scream they should just use Fran Drescher's whining!

There would be no need to amplify Fran Drescher, just send her out in person

seriously though, there are some amazing new non-lethal weapons technologies that are being developed. crazy stuff

Me too. I cannot stand babies crying. It really really bothers me. Which is why I'll never have any of my own. Id much rather be around my niece and be able to give her back to her mom at the end of the day

on one hadn it sounds like satire.. BUT.. I know they are developing some pretty unusual weapons (see link I posted in Tilted Electronics)..

I think I'd class that under cruel and unusual though

There's a guy not too far from where I live that is making electro-magnetic guns and sonic weapons for the military. The sonic weapons are capable of blowing people up. Pretty cool, but not exactly "non-lethal".

Would you believe that whine is an act? I saw an old show with her in it and she spoke clear as a bell with no whining. Now why would someone want to be that annoying?

Perfect. I now have justification for strangling that howling baby on the bus....he poses a threat to my safety.

Babies are so fucking obnoxious. So inconsiderate towards others.
