laugh at California
just had to post this.

link Did they not take chemistry in high school where they teach you how to name chemicals like that? Nice going city council. ..I remember reading a while back a group of senators were discussing what the PH level at public pools should be set at, one of them said 8, one replied, no it should be 7 (which is right, it should be 7...maybe slightly slightly lower because of the chlorine or bromine), so one guy thought, the lower the better! and suggested 0...mmm...most powerful acid ever.. |
What's funny is that no one researched the information on the site before they started to make a big deal about it.
To be honest, I'm in General Chemistry this semister. I got an 85 on the test with the compond naming concepts on it. I certainly would not have associated dihydrogen monoxide with H_2O without thinking about it for a bit. I think that this illustrates a disturbing trend with legislators and technical issues in general. |
Laugh at California all you want. That paralegal was probably educated in Kansas, where it is illegal to teach science "'cause God put all the science you need right here" (raises Bible over head).
Ok, wait, I don't want to start some CA/KS flame war. The fact that NOBODY in the city government managed to catch the whole H2O thing makes me point an laugh too. |
Totally asinine. What else would you expect from the state that elected a orgy loving, steroid injecting, movie star to be the governor?
|
I have a friend who lives by that town, I sent this to him yesterday and he got a laugh out of it.

...my high school chemistry teacher printed out this official looking "warning" about dihydrogen monoxide, then laughed at us. She was cool. *nods* |

Meh, CA owns. I should go to the beach this weekend.

Coming from California I can tell you a few things:
As much as you might want to defend the state, I Can tell you 90% of any public school in THIS area would not understand that humor in that after reading it 5 or 6 times. We're not the brightest bulbs around here. I love Cali, And what's wrong with orgy loving? But seriously, the education system needs a kick in the ass, IMHO |

I loved that |
seen something like that where a kid doing a science fair porject started a petition to ban dihydrogen monoxide. only one person new what it was. at a science fair only one person new what dihydrogen monoxide was. but yeah, i wouldn't be going around and blam it on bad research. you stupid, just admit it.
|
yea but i thought i heard making foam and other hi-tech materials especially for computers was a big drain of earth's resources including water. which i don't understand because i thought water was renewable, no matter what. But banning some of these materials almost makes sense with all the other stuff it uses up and the garbage it eventually turns into
|
What's funny is Aliso Viejo is a very rich sity in the OC, you'd think that with all those doctors and lawyers in the city they could find half educated researchersl.
|
Dihydrogen monoxide is only dangerous if its flouridated...by communists.

I know you're kidding but the only thing we couldn't be taught there was evolution. Because obviously, there's no proof that that ever happened. sigh...I so do not miss KS. |
Hysterical! Thanks for the yucks!!!
|
clavus, you're a hoot. no wonder your comics rock!
one man's foible does not make the entire state retarded. there's an awfully lot of transplants living in california. i am one of them. the school system here does seriously blow. one of the very worst in the nation. even though i admit to not being the sharpest crayon in the box, i'm glad that i wasn't educated in CA. my crayon status might have been even less sharp. |
Oh, my beloved homeland. How you continue to wound me.
|
*raises sword above head*
O cometh ye fellow Californians! Follow me to thy traitor and aggressor Kansas! look, its the crusaders again |
What's funny about this is that the City Manager is a distant Uncle of mine! Aliso Viejo is a newly founded city between Laguna Nigel and Mission Viejo. A simple mistake that was caught apparently. I will have to ask him about this when I see him next.
|
uh, before talking shit about our education system you might be interested in knowing that the chemical name for water is
hydrogen oxide /educated in California--land of the hottest women, world's best climate, and brightest minds |

hydrogen oxide=dihydrogen monoxide=water. it's all the same thing |

While it is redundant, dihydrogen monoxide is still legitimate. |
You got me!
Damnit, I googled all over the place but couldn't find a legitimate source for dihydrogen monoxide as a chemical name. All that came up were websites with that lame joke. Chemistry synonyms be damned, I've been spending all my time with the hot women at the beach lately. I still think that qualifies me as the one of the brightest minds. :) |
From the standpoint of naming conventions, you generally use prefixes like "mono" and "di" when there are different chemical states/compounds that the elements can combine in (eg. vanadium trioxide (V2O3) vs. vanadium pentoxide(V2O5).
But since there is only one possible combination for an oxide of Hydrogen (H2O), it's redundant (and silly) while still being technically correct. |
