Prom Dresses
 

I'd post this in the ladies lounge, but I'm not a lady. Any women know where online to get like a classy dress that my girlfriend can where to prom. The dresses marketed to highschool students for prom are so garish.

What kind of money is she looking to spend?

If she wants something original, thrift shops and vintage stores are a good place to look, as well as ebay (search for "vintage") or do a Google search for "vintage dresses."

Hot Topic has some nifty dresses in the "Goth" or "Lounge" vein.

If you're looking for something more conventional, Chadwicks of Boston and David's Bridal have a nice selection of conservative, "classy" dresses. She might look a little matronly, though.

Interesting that you're looking for her. She doesn't follow the normal trends and other "girlie" type things?

IMO the Prom ranks up there next to a wedding. Most girls already have an idea as to what they are wearing and what you are going to be wearing.

Heck my g/f in HS went to a different HS so she had it all planned out with me wearing different Tuxes.

I'm from Belgium, Europe (as you can see). We don't have something like a prom.
From what I've read and heard, a/the prom is a very major happening in the schoollife/childhood(?)/adolescence.
Can you try and explain the importance of it? Is everyone going? How bad is it when you don't have a date to go with?
Enlighten me!

It's a pretty big deal in High School, but I never really cared. I didn't go to either one of them. I didn't want to waste the money on a tuxedo, and besides, I had no one to go with!

Not a damn person cared that I didn't go. My friends said that both were really bad. :) I didn't miss much. It IS the talk of the school for the few months preceding it and about a week after it, though. I've just heard over and over that they are big letdowns.

Neither me or my girlfriend went to them and we're proud of it! Ha ha. All it is is a ceremony for people to show how spoiled they are and how rich their parents are. It really is ridiculous sometimes (girls buying $500-$1000 dresses for ONE night, renting limousines, etc). A couple of the guys in my school went to the local Goodwill and bought used Tuxedos for $20. They wore them to the prom. I thought it was funny as hell!

The prom itself is just a formal dance. It comes near the end of the last year of high school, which gives it the importance it has. It's generally viewed as a "coming of age" event; you get really dressed up, go to your first (probably) really formal dance, and see people you won't see again for a while looking nicer then they normally do.

I didn't go to mine, because I wasn't really worried about all that. Most people do go though.

Well, we don't have a very big budget. "We" because I'll probably have to pay for her dress. I guess ebay is a good idea.

In response to the other question: I don't think prom is a big deal at all. I didn't go to my prom. I'm out of highschool now, but my girlfriend isn't, and she wants to go. I love her, and I also want to go, just to dance with her. It's just a result of teenage girls being programmed to think it is important when really the experience is nothing.

Check out thrift stores or outlet stores. Found my prom dresses at JCPenny outlet stores.. only paid about 10-20 bux each year.

I didn't go to my formal, and I don't regret it at all.

During my time in school there have been 13 formal dances, and I'm going to my first one and I'm out.
