A suggestion to all those who post!
I wish I could find a better place to post this than here but oh well...
I've seen a great number of people post links to other threads on TFP and these links often look like this: http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthr...0&pagenumber=2 Now, this link tells me nothing. All I know is that it's a link to some other thread on TFP. Why don't people name their threads something meaningful, like the name of the thread they're linking to! I think this would be a great new protocol to have on TFP and I wish I could send this message to more people because I think it's such a good idea... The Academy - Tilted Knowledge - where does water go when you drink it? Thank you... |
Good idea indeed. I don't post links to other threads much but next time when I'll do it, I'll be sure to name the link.
So many views and no post...wt...? This is why Halx and the mods are pissed people!! |

And to answer you suggestion. Most people don't name their links because they don't know how. It's just that simple. |
Well, hey, thanks for your response! I am also confused as to why so many people have read this thread but no one had anything to say. Maybe it's the same people reading the thread over and over again?
Not only this, but I've never seen anybody post a link to another thread that didn't use the URL as the link name. I mean, what's up with that? Again, thanks for your response! |

How about.. the reason why people don't name the links is because why in the hell would someone post a link in a thread if it had nothing to do with it in the first place? I mean, now that I thought of linking people to unrelated material, it will probably happen, but 99% of the links in peoples posts that are unnamed are related to the topic they bring up.

Okay, Chingal0, here's a good example of what I mean...
http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthr...threadid=49145 So, tell me... In context, can you tell where this link is going to? Can you tell if you really wanted to bother seeing what the link is about? Don't you feel kind of left in the dark not knowing where you're going to go if you click on the link? Doesn't it feel like you're walking around with your eyes closed? Wouldn't just a little more context be nice? Incidentally, that link goes to another thread where someone suggests another thread without posting the thread subject, so it's an example of what I'm doing here and why I suggested this in the first place... |
I am an idiot

the system parses URLS for you so sometimes you don't get the opportunity for putting in an actual word.
I understand your point, but it's equal to the subject of threads.... "Look at this".."I found this" "This thread is for..." those are equally UNDESCRIPTIVE But I can tell you that if the person who is BOTHERING to put in a link as a URL especially a Moderator will be pointing you to something relavent to the thread topic. |
This is, in fact, another pet peeve of mine. Why do people not want to tell you the nature of their posts in their subject title? Isn't that the point of the subject title? Why the mystery? It's just a waste of time and bandwidth as people look at your thread only to discover that a bunch of people are talking about something they're totally not interested in...
I'm not sure what you're getting at with the whole "system parses URLs for you" bit. Either you used the java app, which prompted you for the "actual words" or you typed it in yourself. Either way, you always have an opportunity to give the thread title... Not only would it be polite for moderators to include the thread title, regardless of it's relevance, but not everyone who posts thread links are moderators. The example I posted was a link to a thread where a non-moderator made such a post... |
KnifeMissle.
I think you need to settle down :D |
I'm not amused by this thread.

at the bottom of the page is a POST REPLY box.
When I type www.cnn.com or paste, http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthr...threadid=49154 it's just the URL and no opportunity for me to name my link. Get used to the way things are here. You can try to change it by example, but more than likely, you'll find that it's just the way that it is. I don't get paid to moderate, and if I had to edit all the damned titles, I'd not want to be a moderator. Besides, it's part of the way that someone else decided they wanted to express themselves. You happen to be more conservative, others more imaginative. |

W.T.F. ? I don't see any prompt either. How about explaining how to remedy the situation by the poster ......instead of just harping about it. That was a suggestion for all who post about something trivial with the operation of a website that bothers them. ;) |
Anyways, on topic - I never use the 'popup' thingy, I am so used to doing all of my vbb tags manually. 90% of the time I put some text in there, just because I think it looks better :)
btw, it is like this: [*url=http://www.blahblah.com/linky/]Your Text here[*/url] (w/o asterisks). Pretty simple, really. Altho not so simple as just pasting, and I believe some people just don't care to do the extra work. I also understand your point regarding thread titles, I prefer them to be descriptive as well. Some people just don't think it thru, I guess. It's not a perfect world ;) |
I've often had the same thought, but if you just take the extra 10 seconds to type a discriptor, you're golden.
