World population in perspective

This is a World time clock (if you like) that ticks over how many people on the planet are being born, dying etc and to look at this in twenty years time will be interesting indeed.
One wonders.

A sobering look at statistics

cool. they had one of these at a World's Fair, back in the day...

you know what though?
I don't think the earth is anywhere near overpopulated.
People clump together in cities, etc. urbanization is a problem.
cities are way overpopulated.
also, kids are born to people who shouldn't be parents.
things like that concern me.
buckminster fuller demonstrated (and his World Game sites continue this) that we could feed the entire world population easily. it's political boundaries and policies that keep people starving.

so, in general, I'm amazed at the numbers on that page flying by - but I find nothing alarming there.

I am one of those people who is afraid that the earth is overpopulated.

By a factor of six. Too many people, too few resources. Poverty. Misery.

People should just have one kid, if they have to breed at all.

I think the world is overpopulated. But people keep breeding and breeding. One of those things that you have no control over you just sit and watch. Eventually diseases will start knocking out some of the masses.

Interesting site.

Using their birth and death rates of 4.44 births/sec and 1.67 deaths/sec,
in twenty years the world's population will be
over 8 million!

I don't get it. I never will. Why do people bring twelve kids into the world? Especially in some of the poorest countries in the world?

Quit fucking, and adopt twelve kids. They'll love you for it.

You mean 8 BILLION, right? New York City has over 8 million.

The world as a whole is not overpopulated. Some parts of it might be.

Did you know that if you took the entire population of the planet Earth and moved everyone to Texas, the population density would STILL be less than New York City?

mikey: if you were to put everyone into texas, how many days would they last before they died?

the more interesting question is--how much space does each person need, including the space for growing food and forest to build a house (and assuming it's some nice temperate climate on which food can grow?) What is the absolute minimum amount assuming the person is living on corn and soybeans? What is the amount really used when people eat cow, fish, truffles, etc.?

I think you'll find the statistic to be more sobering.

Yup. I did. The answer came out to 8 billion. I read 8 billion. Failed to write it though.

I'll be bold enough to say that most people on this planet are far too stupid to birth children. Some people just need to let their genes die out. That's one of the reasons I'm a big fan of the Darwin Awards.

Also, my radical societal belief is that the world should have strict reproduction laws. Of course, this would cause all kind of atrocities against humanity (backalley abortions, etc), but in a perfect world it would work.

Edit: I just re-read this and realized how horribly vain and elitist it sounded. I believe that the "average" person should have full freedom with whether or not they have children. It's just the people who birth offspring and then treat their kids like crap, or don't treat them at all who I'm really talking about.
