explain Jebus and pr0n to me

I just dont get the reason for using these internet "code words" (for want of a better term) for certain things.

you type pr0n and EVERYONE knows you mean porn.

you type Jebus and EVERYONE knows you mean Jesus.

why bother? whats the fuckin' (not frickin, not f*ckin, not fargin - good old FUCKIN') point?

and while were on the subject of stupid shit that gets on my last nerve:

whats the deal with "pwned"???

the word is "Owned". where did the fucking P come from?

rant over. thanks for listening

fatboss 03-03-2004 02:32 AM

I'm with Sion on this one.

Never noticed the last one (pwned). Saying that, I'll see it every-frickin-where now!

Sorry couldn't resist!

Explanations please all you clever bastards out there.

Mephisto2 03-03-2004 02:44 AM

Pr0n was used to avoid email and web filtering scripts.

Jebus, presumably, because using "Jesus" may insult some or may also be liable to censorship via text scanning tools.

Pretty straightforward when you think about it.

Tophat665 03-03-2004 04:25 AM

Generally, when I use Jebus or Jeezus, or say something like "for the love of Dog and all that is Hairy", I'm belittling Christianity. Honest answer.

As for pwned, it's just script kiddie slang. I mean, how come "psyched" was slang for "so happy and excited". And WTF with "shizzle my nizzle"?

Chingal0 03-03-2004 04:36 AM

I think "Pwned" came about because some computer gamer and his sausage fingers hit the P instead of the O when he was trying to type "Owned" and it stuck. Same thing with the 11!1!!! .. same old shit.

The others seem to make sense, except for that whole shizzle thing.

Shokan 03-03-2004 04:37 AM

Pr0n is just code so you're parents don't know what that directory is in your computer. Its just internet slang.

I'm pretty sure Jebus is a Simpsons reference. Its from when Homer becomes a missonaery on some island. I forget the context but hes running after a leaving plane screaming "OH SAVE ME JEBUS!"

pwned is from Counterstrike, I believe. When typing quickly, its easy to hit the 'p' instead of 'o'. It just kinda caught on after everyone was doing it.

"shizzle my nizzle" - Snoop Dogg lyrical reference. He "made up" a form of slang with everything ending in -izzle. Shizzle my nizzle means "sure my nigger", and in rap slang, not racist.

Anything else?

Actually, I knew the derivation of that one, but WTF still applies. It just seems like a silly way to get from point N to point A.

As Triumph says, there's only room for one Dog in rap. Triumph can Rap. Can Snoop lick his own bizzles?

Cicero 03-03-2004 05:00 AM

The first time I heard someone say Jebus was Homer on the Simpsons. After that episode aired, Jebus was all over the net like pr0n an pwned. Why P instead of O in owned? On a QWERTY keybaord what letter is to the right of the letter o? P. and the letter p is just an o when a stem on the left.

Nisses 03-03-2004 05:14 AM

pr0n, Jebus: the history has already been explained, it's just that you hear people use the word, and either out of force of habit, or to show you are 1337, you adapt the slang. It happens all the time, you hang out with a group, you take over alot of words.

pwned: script kiddie thing, same reason

fuckin'/frickin/fudgin/farkin/fookin/... because of filters mainly, and because some people that mind their language want to use a word that sounds less harsh.

p0thead 03-03-2004 05:41 AM

yup, its all l337 talk that you see a lot on FPS games.

"I can't be a missionary! I don't even believe in Jebus!
...OH SAVE ME JEBUS!"

 best episode ever.
or one of the best, in my opinion anyway.

d00d, ch1ll. 17'5 411 kewl.
(translation: dude. chill, it's all cool)

grumpyolddude 03-03-2004 09:01 AM

I figure that if you want me to understand what you are saying, you'll put it in a language that I can understand. If you overuse slang, you obviously are aiming your post at a narrow audience, or are trying to hard too fit in with that crowd. Either way, you ain't talking to me, so I pass your post and move on.

Nisses 03-03-2004 09:10 AM

mm, grumpy, usage of pr0n, Jebus, frickin' are so widespread, they are part of mainstream online culture really. So normally, people should be familiar with them.

If a person starts talking heavy l33t-speak, just about every 1 out of 2 at least ignores the post, it's extremely annoying :)

grumpyolddude 03-03-2004 09:34 AM

No argument there, Nisses. I use a few abbreviations, myself. There are a lot of keystroke savers that are not annoying at all. and the use of psuedo-cursing is common in spoken communication, too, not just as on-line slang. However, if you bury your message behind a pile of garble, you can't be concerned about whether or not that message gets received.

Lasereth 03-03-2004 09:44 AM

Yeah, pwned came from the typo of owned (P is near O on the keyboard), and since it's cool to leave grammatical mistakes if you're l337, it stuck really really fast. People say it's new, but I've seen it for about 3 years now.

The rest is explained perfectly on the thread!111

arch13 03-03-2004 09:45 AM

Now if we could once and for all remove the word "Teh" from the internet I'd be happy. It just so.....stupid.

spived2 03-03-2004 09:55 AM

Hehe shokan, I think your right about the jebus thing, that's where I know it best from ( and also get many a laughs )

Munku 03-03-2004 10:11 AM

To me, Jebus means like an exclamation.. Like if you almost get hit by a car, you scream out "JEBUS!" No correlation with Jesus to me.

Heh, I don't think that putting Pr0n instead of Porn is going to confuse them.

WTF? that's the point of the english language, we have always made everything so complicated, so we can have the number one hardest language to learn:)

Isn't it kind of limited to have a vocabulary of only 26 words?

Kaos 03-03-2004 12:18 PM

Pr0n and teh and pwn3d were all started as a play on people's common repeated typos.

Then people added h@x0r speak to the typos and that's what you get.

Jebus is soooo Homer Simpson. (8^(|)

tfin 03-03-2004 12:32 PM

I once went off on someone in college becasue he would not swear but he would use frick, fork, fudge, schmit, crud, and all the other psudo curse words all the time, like in every sentence. Finally I just yelled, "Say fuck, you mean it, just say it!" And I went off for another 15 or so minutes. I just figure if you mean it, say it.

And to think that this whole time the urban dictionary has been telling me that it means "Why yes, i whole-heartedly agree with you, my african-american brother"....

I've gotta admit some of the slang is really getting outta hand. Most of it is just so lame that there's no excuse. (off soap box now)

Yakk 03-03-2004 12:41 PM

The point of pr0n is that if you search the hard drive for the string "porn", you don't get anything.

Plus, if the directory looks like:
PR0N
the text-user can try to cd PRON all day and never get into it...

Third, someone reading PR0N might think "oh, shellfish!". Ok not that likely.

Lastly, never underestimate the contempt kids have for parents. =)

That's where I got my influence on that one. I will agree that internet slang does piss a person off.

gophtc 03-03-2004 05:40 PM

i think pwned is more like power/super owned
p can be added to the beginning of a lot of words

Sorta. If you can translate it, you get it.

Xenomorph 03-03-2004 08:34 PM

You've all got the origins of most of the terms right, but none of you have got "pwned" yet. Allow a regular Counterstrike player and former script kiddy to illuminate you.

"Pweened" was once a somewhat popular post-victory text ejaculation. I assume it came from a combination of at least two semi-words, probably 'pounded' and 'winned', but that's just speculation. In any case, "pweened" never totally caught on, and once "Owned" came along, the two sort of merged into "pwned".

Most people pronounce "pwned" as just "owned" with a p sound in front of it. If you really want to distinguish yourself as the coolest kid on the block at a LAN party, be sure to rip out with a "pweened" and then recount this completely pointless story.

Tholo 03-03-2004 09:56 PM

I don't even notice this stuff any more.

tricks 03-03-2004 11:26 PM

ok, so expalin l337 to me. Start with a pronunciation.

MrFlux 03-03-2004 11:33 PM

1337 (pronunciation: leet)(adj)
shortened version of 'elite'

ex. "Gnear, that's so 1337"

Jam 03-03-2004 11:55 PM

TinniT 03-04-2004 01:49 AM

I would like to take full account for the immigration of "fo shizzle" to modern speech.

Jay-Z seriously stole it from me.

I was at the Pomona Theatre on Garey doing a freestyle batlte with a guy stating that he could "take a torch and burn my whizzle into a fizzled without any granting of a raining drizzle" This was back may of '99 when Jay Z was at the same theatre, and I rebuted the lines:

"While it drizzles, take my jizzle down your thrizzle and smizzle"

Few believe me other than those in attendance.

Random rant, but i gaurantee it true. I don't hate JayZ for stealing my lick. I'd hav elikely done the same if money were a factor, but iwas merely pushing some freestyle stuff on the mic. It was merely meant for a relative laugh. It ended up being a phenomemon.

Sucks, don't it?

I hope you're kidding. The "izz" and relating terms goes all the way back to 2 Live Crew's "My Seven Bizzos" and was expanded to "izzle" by Snoop as far back as '91. Jay-z and everyone else jumped on that bandwagon.

As for pwned, 1337 and others, I think they're fun to use. I have a very large vocabulary but I enjoy the relaxing methods of speech slang provides. Dont' let it pwn j00. ;)

Just to show you how used to these words I am, I thought this topic was gonna be about Jesus being in blasphemous porn or something.
