Have you ever?
Torn the tag off a mattress just because it seemed so tempting to think you could get by with something that says illeagal?

No, but I did reproduce a CD that said it.
And I did copy pages of a book, that said I shouldn't. (In my case they were legal actions) EDIT: removed a quote that didn't belong in my post

heh...I tore the tag off when I was younger, and my uncle had me convinced the cops were going to come and take me away to prison. This is the same uncle that also had me convinced that my Cabbage Patch doll came to life when I left the room :-p

I think it's kinda like tearing the front cover off of a paperback book. If you're buying a book with the cover missing the book is (probably) being sold illegally, meaning the publisher and author have not recived the fair share. Likewise, if you're buying a matress with the tag missing, the manufacturer has not indorsed the sale and is not recieveing any of the profit. The illegal warning on the label only serves to protect buyers and sellers.

Why would it be illegal to resell a matress? Besides the fact that I would not want to know what happened on that mattress before I bought it......
As for tearing the tag off, I think I did it as a kid for shits and giggles.

The tag documents the materials the mattress is made of. If I understand correctly, that could be important to a buyer, so removing it was made illegal. This is from what I remember seeing last time I looked at one of them things.

Doesn't it clearly say on the tag that the consumer can remove it???
Edit: I'm a fool. MrSelfDestruct already answered my question...guh.

I've never really read a matress tag? Why is it illegal to remove it? Its not like its a certificate of authenticity that certifies its a real matress.

Geez people. I first saw one of those tags with I was like 8 years old. Noticed that it said "it is illegal to remove this tag", and thought that was really funny that there's a law about ripping off a mattress tag. Then I read the "EXCEPT BY CONSUMER" part that followed and got over it then and there.
It's amazing how many people I've heard since then say "OMG IT'S ILLEGAL TO RIP OFF YOUR MATTRESS TAG!!! HAHAH ISNT THAT NUTS? I'M GONNA RIP THE TAG OFF! UH OH I'M A CRIMINAL NOW! HAR HAR!!" What part of "EXCEPT BY CONSUMER" do they not understand?! |

I've never known the "except by consumers" part, but now I have a question that this thread sparked: does the same law apply to other items with tags, like shirts and whatnot? It's not like it's terribly important, but I am now officially curious.
