Any parents out there use it? Does anyone remember that it even exists in all TVs?

It was a massive push from the Clinton adminstration to put to rest the issues that the FCC is facing today. Obviously it hasn't.

I've never used it. I see that I can on my TV from the menu, just haven't bothered. My kids are never home alone, so really there isn't a need for it.

I see no need for the chip if the parents are being parents.

Amen. They didn't have that when I was a kid and my parents managed to make sure I didn't watch anything they didn't approve of (at least not at home). With a little discipline you don't need a chip to control what kids are watching on the tv.

I never noticed the thing. My mom can't has trouble changing the video mode, nevermind setting the V-Chip. I don't even know if my TV is new enough to have one.

I agree to....I see the V-chip as an excuse to be a lazy parent.

yeah screw parental controls. I mean come on, all of us snuck things we weren't supposed to see at some point, and most of us turned out ok. I found my dad's S&M mags and Penthouse Letters, and later on my mom's bf's pornos and I turned out no less fucked than I was going to anyway.

If you really want the kids to not see it then don't let the TV babysit.

What's this Vchip? What does it actually do? Censor words? Blur rap videos? Turn off if there are too many skintones?
I'm really interested in this, I have never heard about it (I'm not from America)

this is taken from here:

Quote:
The Violence Chip is a new chip that will be installed in all television sets from this point on as mandated by the Telecommunications Act of 1996. This is a programable chip, meaning when parents buy their television sets they can program in certain criteria (such as amounts of violence, sex or explicit language) of the programs they do not want to see, or their children to see. Programs that have been predetermined of having any of these attributes will be blocked out of the TV set.

I wish I had one on my TV just so I could set it an piss off my roommates. But other than that I don't think there is much on TV that is going to warp children beyond belief.

The Vchip seems like one of those short term solutions to a long term problem that politicians are so fond of.

I was hoping the introduction of the VChip would allow for greater freedom over the airwaves...since the content could now be governed by the consumer.
But alas, no. Just wishful thinking.

VChip is just dumb.

A lot of modern television has their ways of restricting certain shows. Here's some of the ways:

1. If you have DVD player or Playstation 2, set the parental content. Simple as that.

2. If you use satalite, set the parental content. Simple as that.

3. If you have a modern TV (Although, few models do have this) Set the parental content.

In other words, Vchip is just another chip off the shitload of useless technology.

Big brother is watching you.

TiVo also has a parental content code, and it can be individually set for different levels of sex/violence/whatever.
