I grew up there, and I have fond memories; I was there a few days ago, and it looks like a dump; just looking for folks to reenforce my memories.

Never been there. The planned casino should clean it up IMHO.

There's already a large casino in Verona (aprox 5 mi E), but that's not what I mean; it used to be a nice, clean small city; now the downtown area is disgusting; it looks like a trailer-trash training area. I guess you CAN'T go home again.

bull, it appears that a lot of the towns, villages, etc. in upstate ny are the same way. e. g., downtown binghamton, buffalo, and utica. there is no incentive for industries to stay and thrive in governor george's playland...

The whole of Upstate is like a war zone; if I was younger, I'd get the hell out, but my kids and grandkids are here; I've got a pretty secure job, but it pisses me off no end to see the whole area go into the shitter.

Schenectady is pretty much a shit hole too. And Troy. Beyond RPI there's nothing much going on there.

Yeah I grew up in Rome as well. Wasn't bad when the Air Force base was operating but as soon as that closed down.... I do agree with you -- I too spent a few days up there over the holidays and it was depressing to just drive around. Quite noticable the decrease in industry and therefore the level of income available to those remaining residents...

My dad works for the GE plant in Schenectady, has for nearly 30 years now. He's been lucky, hasn't lost his job or been laid off. There have been a few strikes in his time though. But the plant has been steadily downsizing all along. A lot of work has been moved down south, to places like Kentucky and South Carolina. Cheaper labor down there.

I work for a manufacturing company as well. We're doing pretty well, busy at the moment on the shop floor. But the company had some rough times the past few years. The country as a whole is going out of the manufacturing sector. If it weren't for places like China we'd have it pretty rough. We manufacture and sell products to China all of the time.

The economy here in Upstate/Central NY is pretty bad. I live in the suburbs of Albany and it costs so much to live here. I'll be moving out soon, and apartment costs are pretty high I think. But thats just the way it is. Idealy I'd like to move away from here in the next few years. Where to I'm not quite sure yet.
